I bought these to use as under-shelf lighting for bookshelves I use for craft shows. The Dots DO provide light, and the battery seems to last forever (I used them for HOURS) but weren't as bright as needed them to be. That said, I only tried them out in the above instance, and not in any other, so they may be perfect for dark closets, etc. They did burn very brightly when accidently turned on in my empty Totes box! The sticky tape on the back is VERY sticky, so do NOT put these on anything with a coating. I had to repaint my black shelves when I took them off.

Sylvania's first bullet of features is its "Optional 4 on/off Settings" which led me to believe that I could set up to 4 programmed times during either 7 day, 5 day, or 2 day (weekend) cycle and it would turn the lights on/off during those times. I thought it would be nice to turn the xmas lights on off at night and also on/off in the morning so I could see them on my way to work. Program 1 was set for the night and everything went perfectly - Program 2 was set for the AM and it failed to turn on. After reading others reviews, and verified by my own experience, it seems that the 4 programmed timers only work 1 at a time and do not automatically switch to the other programms. I bought these locally from a wholesale club, but so far so good. First, they're BRIGHT! I can't emphasize this enough. I've seen all sorts of tap-lights and even used some of the newer LED lights. They were all toys compared to this light! There's a warning on the back of the lights not to look directly into them and they're not kidding. I agree with the previous reviewer's complaint that they produce a very small spotlight beam. BUT, this is very easily fixed. When you take the cover off to change batteries, look at the lens holder. There will be a slot on one side. Just insert a screwdriver into the slot and the entire lens/optic pop right out. In doing so you now have a light which puts out a perfect smooth flood of light. I have one of these on my nightstand, and gave one to my elderly mother for hers. A simple wave of the hand turns the light on, and it casts light directly upward, onto the ceiling. It never wakes my husband, but provides me plenty of light to get in and out of the room safely. Plus, if the power goes out, I could always use it like a flashlight to move around the house, if I had to. This light would work well under a cabinet, inside a cabinet, inside a closet, or even in a car. It wasn't intended for bedside use, but there's no reason not to use it that way, and it's a softer light than turning a lamp on. Like most of my experience so far with florescent lamp bulbs, the life span is too short to make up the extra cost compared to an incandescent bulb. This one lasted a few months, but but more importantly, I received a small fraction of its' advertised hours of life (6000) -- I got about 400 before it died. I read somewhere that you get better life out of fluorescent lamp bulbs if they are not cycled frequently, and let run longer (e.g. not good for a quick bathroom break), but this particular lamp was cycle maybe 2 times per day, and usually left on for 1 hour minumum. I'll continue to buy these types of bulbs, mainly for the reduced heat, but I won't be buying this one again.

I put three of these in my closet so I could see my clothes better. The light they provided was minimal. I wouldn't recommend these for anything more than a gloves compartment in a car or carryone one around to see a keyhole.
