All of the plastic parts that hold the back axel and two wheels on were broken (I think there were four). It was snug in the Amazon box, but I think it must have been poor quality plastic in order to break just by placing it in the box. The broken plastic pieces were in the box. I really doubt that plastic could have withstood being used out in the garden with an adult scooting on it. I hate returning items but this was beyond use.

I have one of these and find it a perfect compromise between utility, size, and storage needs for the car. Note that while the description says it extends for long reach, that's still only about 3 feet. That's just fine for taking along in your car for the occasional dig-out, but you'll get tired of using really quickly if you are thinking of using it for your front walk! The push-button mechanism for the handle extension is easy to use, the blade and handle are strong, and the extension of the handle into the blade ensures long-life, unlike some models that are pinned into a short socket only. You want stainless steel, as in this shovel, when you are storing a shovel in your car - you don't want it rusting in your trunk, staining everything it touches.

Might work well for plastic bags, but I was unhappy with it as soon as I tried to put a paper yard waste bag on it. I bought it special-order from local Ace Hardware, and returned it without even completing assembly. I checked the online measurements and figured since it is five inches wider than the bags it would be fine. On the Ames website, the catalog shows it with a paper bag on it. But my 30-gallon paper municipal yard waste bags are 3 inches too wide to fit the base well. You need to crunch in two corners to fit between those red plastic "arms" the two wheels are attached to. I was looking for something to scoop up huge piles of dead leaves, and I was having a lot of trouble finding anything big enough! I usually use two dust pans as a scooper set, but I was tired of so much bending! I knew a snow shovel would work, but living in the San Francisco Bay Area made it very had to find one. The Lift-Rite 18-inch aluminum is a snow shovel that I have been using for the last ten winters. It was well designed for the lifting of heavy scoop of snow as well as pushing snow. It's light and egornomically designed for the easing up of its user. Ames really did a good job on manufacturing the product. It makes one want to proclaim made-in-the-US of A with an exclamation. I recently bought online a new shovel from Amazon to replace my two old and worn ones. They now even designed it a little better than the ones ten years ago. Although the cost is more expensive, however, I am sure it's well worth it. By the way, I also bought a 24-inch aluminum snow pusher made by Ames from a local store to replace my existing ten-year old worn one. 11-25-2008

Had I not been replacing an exact replacement this review would be worse. The grey part in the picture with the round looking ball on it that guides the hose back on the reel had two female sections rather that one male and one female. Hence no way to screw the two together. Good thing I was able to salvage my old one and use it. It seems like this was a repackaged unit and not an unopened new unit from the manufacturer. I had read a few reviews on this item before purchasing and they also thought the same. There is also a part that comes pre-assembled that leaks. Nothing I can do about that. Lucky for me it's only a few drips. I would expect better quality from Amazon and may think twice before buying anything in the future.

Received this 1.5 years ago. Has been under the deck semi-protected from rain. Green paint has completely flaked off, creating quite a mess, and the metal underneath is completely rusted. Won't be long before the metal is rusted through and this goes to the dump. Looks like gardeners supply sells one nearly identical, but it is powder coated, which is generally immune to the weather. Unfortunately, it is unavailable now.

As the other reviewers note, this edger does take some physical effort. However, it does a nice job and gives me a bit of a workout. The construction is sound and it should last you a long time. Recommended for anyone who wants to reduce their carbon footprint.

I bought a different hand trimmer before this one, which was terrible. This one is sturdy and cuts well. I've had it for months now and the foam padding on the handles and the blades themselves have held up. Just what I was looking for in a trimmer.
