We really like this newer Drill Doctor, seems easyer to use. We wore out the last one. Beleive this is a good sharpener for the money.

I couldn't find one of these at any of the "big box stores" so I got it from here, which is better anyway since I probably would have paid more at the store I'm sure. These wheels don't wear down for a long time. I've still got the original in my 500X and that's after sharpening at least 100 bits many times over. In my opinion the grinding wheel is better than the machine itself, at least the 500X (see my review for that if you wish).

This is a simple to use tool, with easy to understand instructions. Probably written by someone who speaks and writes English as a first language. My drill bits were in fairly good shape, so it took only seconds to sharpen each bit to precision. This is a must have tool. I only wish they would come out with one that sharpens spade bits.

Although Drill Doctor claims this model is suitable for heavy duty use, it's clearly not. Plastic and die cast pot metal (more plastic than die cast). Motor didn't have power to sharpen even small bits without bogging down. Don't even try to do split tips this cheap thing will not handle it. If you're anything other than a very light home hobbiest run from this tool it's not worth it. I tried it on 3 or 4 drill bits with limited success and returned it for refund.

SOME TIMES IT SHARPENED BITS AND SOMETIMES IT DID NOT. DO NOT EXPECT THE BITS TO WORK VERY WELL ON METAL, OKAY FOR WOOD PROJECTS. SMALL BITS REALLY DO NOT SHARPEN. A BIT CAN BE SHARPENED ABOUT THREE TIMES, SO IT DOES BEAT GOING TO THE STORE OVER AND OVER.

Be aware that the description of this item is incorrect, with the exception of the manufacturer's description line. This part is for the older "classic" series of Drill Doctors, NOT for the newer version that Amazon now sells. Only the models without the trailing X in the model number can use this. All of the lines above that say it is for ...500X, 750X are incorrect. It is the wrong diameter, as the newer wheels are smaller. Other than that, it may work fine, but it won't fit my DD, so I can't tell. Note: Amazon updated the description line to be correct now. However, they still list this as an accessory for the X series and list them in the "better together" link. Sigh.

I was a bit apprehensive about ordering this tool as it looks to be just another cheap plastic tool that "almost works". I was pleasantly surprised to find the tool very well designed and it does it's intended job very well indeed. It is fast to setup and use so you'll use it often, which is a good thing as a tool is only as good as its cutting edge. It does take two hands to operate; one to move the tool bit holder and the other to anchor the tool itself, but not big deal. Recommended.

If you have left handed bits this is a must have item as the normal chuck does not sharpen left handed bits-it actually makes them worse(I know I tried til it dawned on me that maybe a regular drill docor chuck will not sharpen them;drill doctor confirmed this via customer service phone call).
