I just ordered and received this. I haven't used it yet, so this is an initial impression. It's fairly nice, and feels solid. The only thing I don't like is that the thumb screw used to adjust the unit is made of plastic, and looks cheap. It may hold up well over time, but it makes the unit feel cheap, which it isn't.

I have used this honing guide with DMT diamond stones on a set of Hirsch chisels as well as on plane blades up to 2" wide. I used, coarse (blue), medium (red) and fine (green) grits, and was able to achieve nice even edges. Chisels mount in the narrower inner chanel and plane blades in the outer chanel. I simply matched the existing edge angles by lightly honing and adjusting the blade insertion depth as needed. If you want to set a precise edge angle you would need a protracter since the guide does not have any calibrations (the instructions suggest using a ruler). In use I found that the guide did a good job of maintaining angles. While I agree, every woodworker can use one of these, this one ain't it. It is NOT all rosewood as the manufacturer would have you believe. Only the face is. The slider is some cheap hardwood poorly stained to resemble rosewood. Again, Crown products are far superior than Footprint's. And in this case, less $$$. Matter of fact, you can get these for about $25 at your local WoodCraft stores. And their brands are cheaper and better quality (all rosewood for one).

The Sorby, Hirsch, and Ray Iles mortising chisels were all way out of my budget and my bevel edge chisels were getting wedged in when I was cutting some large and deep intersecting mortises in workbench legs. I wish Amazon had pics, these are not thick like mortising chisels, but seem to be the standard size and shape without the side bevels. I looked around and saw that 3/8 was the most useful chisel size for mortising if you only have one. It didn't take long to flatten the back and change the bevel to 25 deg. Even if you leave it at 30 deg. it still must be honed. The edge has held through chopping the mortises and I have been hammering away with my mallet (I was much more worried about my shop-made mallet than the chisels edge).
