The 4D cell MagLite is a remarkable piece of equipment in its original form. The upgrading to a LED made it better. I live in the country and I need a light that will brighten up the dark. This one does it. The color rendition with the LED is great, even better than with the original bulb. Chris

Well, O.K., I don't sneer at hurricanes. But after Hurricane Ike and a week without power, we decided to upgrade our emergency lighting to more than flashlights, candles and chemical light sticks. I bought three of these family-sized Coleman lanterns and three MicroPacker lanterns (also reviewed). The first time I turned on this family-sized lantern I went "WOW!" This is a serious light! I measured the light output of this lantern (I'm a photojournalist) and discovered it puts out half the light of a 40 watt bulb, but much, much more light than a 25 watt bulb. There is plenty of light for reading and walking around like a human being instead of stumbling around with flashlights. I have had several maglites in the past and this one is by far the best. its size makes it heavy for some. its the brightest one i have owned. i am thinking of getting a second one just becasue i like it so much. i advise to anyoen that camps and hikes to get thsi one or a smaller one.

Works well around the house and can't do without at work. It small enough I can easily keep it at hand and tough enough it takes the spills and bumps. I have to get into tight spaces working on photo processing machines. This light not only gets in but gives me more than enough light to see.

The light is nice and bright as long as you keep cranking but obviously not very handy when you're working with both hands. Seems good for emergencies.
