The Firesteel's 12000 strike lifetime is about equal to that, perhaps a little longer, without the bulk but also without the builtin kindling of the matchstick. It's easy enough to waterproof matchheads in candlewax. With that said, the Firesteel, striker, and a dozen cottonballs soaked in Vaseline fits in an old McCormick spice jar. 6 boxes of 250 matches each is significantly bulkier. The firesteel comes with a protective paint coating on the stick. This needs to be scraped off before use. This is undoubtedly the reason for the complaints of difficulties. The unit I received is a used one. It's has a fairly visible dent on the rod. The package looks like openned before, and then re-sealed.

I am not a camper but the butane fuel canisters with the compact stove is a wonderful use anywhere burner for inside and outside of the home. Canisters are the size of hair spray cans making them easy to store. Wish I had known about this product years ago. I think it needs to listed with kitchen stuff.

For the price, this is a very nice stove. One burner lights easily with the "insta-spark" method; the other burner is more stubborn, but does light after 5 or 6 clicks. There is plenty of heat available from each burner, and the windscreens (sides and rear) do a good job. I haven't used up a full canister of propane, yet; but from the sound of the gas whooshing through those burners, I suspect Coleman's estimate of how long a canister will last are... well, "not conservative". The only thing I would have changed in the design is to add a friction hinge to the top lid. There is absolutely nothing to prevent that lid from crashing all the way over, unless you hold it and gently lower it. Although rarely factored in, fuel always adds bulk or weight to a backpacker's stove, nevertheless, this little stove has a lot going for it. The built-in piezo-electric start is a really great feature and works on the first try on mine. The burner can be regulated from barely a flame to a roaring jet blast with easy adjustment. It folds up like a 'Transformer' into a tiny unit that fits into a fabric carry case and weighs next to nothing. Well engineered and constucted, it will definitely serve its purpose well when needed. High marks for this little dynamo!
