I purchased this product as a replacement for my old, OLD 3D Home Architect. Having used software of this type before, it was very easy to use right out of the box. It comes with a tutorial which may be helpful to someone who is not familiar with how to use different features, but I was more impressed with the online Home Talk user forums. If there is a question as to how to accomplish something, chances are it has been discussed there. Overall, I find that Home Designer software is a much more stable program than my old 3D Home Architect; (it hasn't 'crashed' yet) and gives me plenty of options to play with. A few months ago, I was searching for a product to convert my VHS tapes to DVD format, as I am moving in the coming months and wanted to "downsize" a bit. The first product I chose was this one, and I was severely disappointed for a couple of reasons: First, any product of this nature involves a bit of an investment. One must buy DVD's and cases, as well as an audio/video cord (and probably an extra long one, if you don't have an extra VCR laying around, as it needs to be pretty near your computer). Now, that investment wouldn't be so bad if the finished product was satisfactory, but sadly that probably will not be the case. I guess you could say when it come to ease of use -- in terms of just setting up this gizmo and running monitor adjustments -- it gets 4 stars, maybe 5, for ease of use. Install the software in a minute, position the sensor, start the program, lie to the software and say your monitor has no controls of any kind (Spyder will then kick off a completely automated, hands-free scan), and less than 10 minutes later you're home free. Unfortunately after over a dozen runs on 3 of my monitors, it's evident that Spyder's programmers are fascinated, maybe even obsessed, with the color RED. They must figure the redder the better, I guess. Finally I ignored one of their iron-clad rules: rather than leave the room totally dark or covering my monitor with a blanket during the scans, I turned on the rather subdued, soft lighting ... Installation on both a pc and a mac was easy. Getting the USB MIDI driver installed on the pc was annoying and time-consuming - but that's not a Sibelius issue. My biggest complaint now is that I am unable to use the supposedly superior "flexi-time" note input mechanism. I am a pianist and professional piano teacher, my fiancé is a computer professional, and between the two of us and way too many hours of trying to make this work, we still haven't figured out what is wrong. Apparently I am not the only one with this issue. Online I found this cry for help: "When I use flexi-time, there's a delay between when I play the note and when I hear it over headphones. Re: Mr. Thompson's comment I made a macro to do the transform operation he is referring to. I select the object(s), press the transform macro I created, then hit the first point and second point. Viola! This program is so easy to use. I figured it out in like 2 hours... Of course there were a lot of things I learned as I went along and if you use it every day you get real fast. It is easy to make precision drawings. Adding dimensions is simple. There are a few things that you figure out as you go along that make your life easier. selecting a color and hatch fill are so easy (2 clicks - click fill solid or hatch and the select color) no problem with the border line whatsoever. However, if you are considering using Photoshop for the first time, and you can get past the high price, and you have some time to invest in learning it, and a lot of time to invest using it...it's an amazing piece of software. I just do occasional nick nac graphics work and I can't live without it. Ive been using Photoshop for about 10 years and probably don't use 20% of it's power or features, but it is indispensable. I use it to create web graphics and save, touch up and modify all kinds of graphic files. The best thing about Photoshop is that you work in layers and can save and view any number of layer combinations which keeps your graphic alive and oh so usable.
