I do like their operating systems but I feel that almost every other microsoft program has a superior and cheaper competitive software package. However, they have really done something with One Note. One Note is a program designed for taking notes. I think microsoft had students in mind because as a student, I got a copy for free. So, I thought I would try it. Installed this as a second OS on a MacBook Pro - runs perfectly. Everyone likes to knock Vista - but, bottom line, given a well equipped machine - Vista is way ahead of XP. As a developer, there are things I just couldn't do under older OS's. This package with the Ultimate version is excellent value.

I've finally upgraded to VFP 9 and it's just tough that Microsoft has announced this will be the final version... just really tough! Installation is quick along with product updates from Microsoft.

Workgroup edition is an entry-level version of sql server 2005. I've used it successfully in our small departments, and for when I didn't need BI. For heavy lifting, you'll need a higher, more full-featured version. For BI (analysis services, reporting services, notification services, transformation services) you'll need at least standard. To help get sql server set up and configured properly I relied heavily on Stanek's SQL Server 2005 Administrator's Pocket Consultant, at just under 600 pages it packs in lots of detail.

If you're going with a higher end computer, this is undoubtedly the OS of choice. Surprisingly, in such systems (e.g., 8 GB RAM with good video card) this boots and runs faster than XP-Pro (even in super-slick "Aero" mode, delegated to video by Vista). For higher end computers the cost difference is insignificant, whereas performance difference is definitely not (coming from a die-hard XP-Pro fan). 64-bit applications are not yet in abundance but they will be in time...another key factor is RAM, where 32-bit OS (including Vista) can only access 3.2 GB. With the low price of even high-end RAM, the fact that Vista occupies more is of little significance. The software looks good and feels professional, yet when you try to delve into it, it bites you. Software like this is supposed to make life easier. However this software seems extremely rigid in its approach and unintuitive. It doesnt predict common issues that are bound to crop up. If you want to resolve what seems like a simple problem theres usually no direct route to do it and you have to spend an hour tinkering and working around things. Unfortunately typical Microsoft product I have to say, seems like they're more interested in crosslinking you to their websites and pay services than they are in providing you with a competant and truly customer orientated piece of software.
