I had a chance to try the PN-40 extensively on a recent off-trail desert hiking trip. The unit performed flawlessly, and though I'm pretty picky about features, at the end of the week, I still didn't have a wish list.
Delorme's new high resolution color aerial imaging is a real upgrade from it's previous topo and "satellite" imagery. Comparing side by side with Google Earth, Google has a slight edge on resolution, but it's pretty close. And for a mobile GPS, the resolution is more than you need, and you can zoom up on details that provide more than enough detail. Delorme's new subscription pricing option of $30 for a year's worth of unlimited map downloading is a much better pricing model than the old "pay as you go", which got expensive fast.
The PN-40 is fast, both in GPS ... Read More

The Delorme is a great value. However, it is also somewhat complex. We plan to use this in a motorhome. Hope the dw figures out all features of this program. We have not actually used this to navigate as of yet. I have lit it up and know that it works and looks great. I suspect there may be a long learning curve for my navigator as she has never used a gps type device before and had some issues with map navigation. Hopefully once set up and in use the real time visibility will make this more intuitive? I do advise printing out some or all of the "help" features.

My Earthmate GPS works great. The only thing I would change is the USB plug on the devise. It sometimes fails to make good contact and needs to be cleaned befor connection. I also would like to have control over the device odometer so I can match it up with the actual miles I have on my bike.

What irritates me most is the DeLorme Street Atlas USA 2009 box pictures a PDA (handheld pocket pc) on it; giving one the impression that it's useful for a pocket pc. I have T-Mobile Wing (WM 6.0), brand new; this is the first software I added to it, and it is absolutely unuseable for a pocket pc; a complete waste of time. A few reasons why:
1) Maps need to be "converted" from laptop to handheld; take minutes per map; you need to select what part of the map you want to convert; just selecting two grids (only part of AZ) yield an 11 meg file to be transfered to Pocket PC
2) Locating address (search) takes minutes on Pocket PC; once you do this, it takes several minutes to search for the route; even a simple route just a few miles away! And forget about selecting address from ... Read More

DeLorme Street Atlas USA Plus 2009

I thought I was pretty good with computer programs but this one is really tough to learn. Of course any one can do it but be prepared to spend a couple of full days.

My take is that they should have used the system that Microsoft or Apple uses to make a program easy to use. For instance they could have a much more logical menu system and the controls could be more in line with other such software. Instead they chose to create a foriegn system that requires a lot of time to learn. But, when you get it, you got it!

Otherwise it is a very comprehensive program that with some additional (and expensive) add on's make the program very useful for travelers. As a stand alone it is not worth the money.

The TOPO 7.0 National Edition was delivered much sooner than expected and when it was removed from the shipping container looked like I had brought it home from the store. This is the best way for me to purchase products. Saves gas, shopping crowds, and trying to find a parking place.

I wish I had known what the graphics looked like before I bought this. When zoomed in, the topo lines are angular, not rounded. Lakes look like trapezoids. Hill tops have incorrect straight edges. The topo increments are at 50 feet instead of 20, so details about the land forms cannot be seen very well or at all.

It is possible to order from the company USGS maps in little sections, which look good on the screen, but print out too blurry to use for competitions.

The good aspects of the program is that they have helpful tech assistance, my GPS data can be transferred onto the map (I had to work with Garmin and DeLorme tech assistance to make it work), the 3D display is easy to use and interesting, the topo covers every state I would ever go to, and the navigating features ... We were told about the Earthmate GPS by a fellow RV'er and went to Amazon and ordered it and received it quickly. It was well priced and with the offer from Amazon to apply for their Visa we saved even more. Thank you
Amazon.
We are still have some issues with the software, but it is more of us not being savvy on how to work with the downloads and such. There are a lot of great drop downs with this software. I think this product will be a real asset to us once we get some of the bugs worked out.

Ours is a road construction company and we use map programs almost every day. The map data in this program is much more comprehensive than Microsoft's. Besides the added topo elevations, this map actually shows and has names of lakes, rivers and streams. Delorme also has better measuring and drawing tools. The Delorme program is more complex than Microsoft's, but you have many more viewing choices. Delorme's program is definitely better for someone that needs more than just a simple road map.
