161.Adobe Acrobat 5.0 from: Adobe

Software : Adobe Acrobat 5.0
I don't know how our household functioned without this handy little program. The older version works just fine, does everything it is supposed to do with ease. Sure, it lacks some of the fancy features of the newer versions, but the price is better.

One caveat: Be sure the item you are buying is a regular license, not a student or "educational" copy. Sellers do not always mention this little detail.

I started with Dreamweaver 3, upgraded to Studio 8 and now have Web Premium for my website design and could not be happier with improvements by Adobe. Not only do you have improved software but the software has great support through the "help" section and tutorials by Lynda. You can't go wrong with this upgrade!

The latest from Adobe is even more prone to crashes than v.7.

It also is much more sluggish and seems to take more time to render animations. It still doesn't take full advantage of memory and processing power from the workstation.

This version merely offers a couple of gimmicky new tools and new, albeit boring packaging.

Let's hope that "Motion," Apples competing animation application will quickly improve and keep Adobe from getting lazy.

Otherwise animators and broadcast designers are stuck with whatever crap Adobe dumps on us. They control the market.

While it's true the cost of this software may be a bit high for scrapbooking parties, the intention of the software is for designers...mainly professional. I've used PhotoShop for about 6 years now and have upgraded to CS2 and I love it. It's not difficult to learn if you understand what it is you want to do with the program. A great book to help teach PhotoShop is Adobe PhotoShop CS Classroom in a Book. There is a whole series of these that walk you through some general and not-so-general examples to help you get better aquainted with the software. From photo manipulation to greating your own graphic, the possibilities are endless.

167.Adobe Illustrator 10.0 from: Adobe

Software : Adobe Illustrator 10.0
Illustrator is probably the BEST product around for anyone seriously creating drawings and artwork on a computer. It packs in all the usual features, Bezier curves, color models, line and artwork control, and it has dozens of nifty new features. These include a powerful macro facility (direct or via Applescript), a rubber stamp like "symbol" facility, artistic styles that can be applied to surfaces, filtering "effects", gradient meshes for creating shaded surfaces, and the ability to define your own keyboard shortcuts.

Yes, it has a serious learning curve. No, it is not a paint program. Yes, it has some flaws and a few bugs. No, you still have to have some artistic ability to use it.

I've tried Freehand, Expression, Corel Draw and several other rivals. They are not bad programs, ... Read More

I just can't learn this application. Coming from a Powerpoint world, this seems to be just the most obtuse application I've ever come across. Even simple things like making a layer a solid color (any color!) seems to require special skills. The help function is entirely useless. I just don't refer to it anymore. This application seems to assume you already know how to use it. Tremendously high learning curve, at least for those of us coming from the user-friendly Windows environment. And the help you find online seems to refer to a myriad of different interfaces and menu layouts, since Adobe seemingly changes everything with every new version. Yuck.

For those of you who design graphics, webpages, presentations, publications, or just enjoy working with a great piece of drawing software, Adobe Illustrator is for you. Adobe Illustrator gives you fine precision over your artwork, so that you can truly make it your own. Using Adobe Illustrator, you will be able to work in the developing field of vector graphics, a great enhancement. Vector graphics are great, because if you need to stretch or skew a picture a vector graphic will remain crisp and sharp around the edges unlike more traditional bitmap style images. You can also save your graphics in the SVG format for use on your webpages. This will help to ensure that your graphic always looks the way that you intended it to. In addition, Adobe Illustrator works amazingly well with other Adobe products (such as Acrobat) ... Read More
