The camera is a nice design, fair quality image and easy to set up. The enclosed web-based software from Dlink is nice and easy to handle and does the job cleanly and simply. Exactly what you want from a home or small office camera system to monitor activity. However, I purchased the cameras (2) because of the description of the IP security suite that was supposed to come with it, allowing 16 cameras to be monitored and recorded simultaneously. Rubbish....! The software was terrible and recording just one camera was a pain, then playing it back was even worse. It's hard to describe just how bad that software was. Cameras were nice though.

I purchased this camera because I didn't want to run Ethernet cable to my router. If this is not a problem for you, I would recommend you check out the BB-HCM311A. Note that with the BB-HCM371A, you still have to run wire for power, which sort of defeats the wireless concept. Be warned that you still need an ethernet cable to plug into your router for set up. Speaking of setup, if you don't know your network settings, this camera will be a pain to setup. For example, if you don't know the IP to your DNS, you're in trouble. Fortunately for me, I managed to configure it successfully and I'm no system administrator. Physical installation was straight forward. Bought it from Sam's. Could not install on Vista with included (dated) software. Went on their website and downloaded software. After a while had it running. Worked fine initially until the computer was restarted. On mine Norton firewall is a startup program - it blocks the camera from being discovered (i did the trusted configuration etc with the ip address of the camera etc - all geek work in spite of non existent documentation anywhere including in the knowledge center on how to get around it). Ironically, wasted ton of time so far trying to circumvent - negated the benefit of easy install. Note: Every time i turn off the firewall it works. But how long can you keep firewall turned off? The video quality is adequate for what it's for. I don't plan to make movies with it. I like being able to see the front and back of my house. However, the user manual is worthless. The biggest drawback is that the wireless cameras totally knock out my wireless home network. Laptops put next to the access point can't find a signal. It uses the same 2.4 GHz band as home routers. Swann said there is no solution, buy a wired system. Defeats the convenience feature, doesn't it? It could possibly interrupt your neighbor's as well. This must go for any other wireless system. I gave this product a low score because of the wireless network problem.

I ordered this camera because the product description stated that it allowed "users to access the camera anywhere in the world by using a Web browser." In my work, we are doing a lot of video, audio conferencing using packages such as NetMeeting, SharedView, Communicator and son on. I, naively, assumed that a product making such a claim, would be easily set up in a way that allowed me to see what was going on in my living room while I was at work, on the road or on vacation. I'd really give this camera 3.5 stars. If setup were easier, it would be a solid 4, if it didn't have manual focus 4.5, if all of above were true and the company's manual or website gave decent support, it would be 5 stars because of the low costs but high features. My Trendnet IP312W is connected to a Mac (OS X Leopard) airport express network used for home and baby monitoring. Mac support from Trendnet's site and manual for this product is woefully low. I am using it with Evocam software, which provided moral support during the various evenings I spent getting it to work. (Eventually selecting "use RTSP" for this camera in Evocam brought an image from the camera, that was after I changed the camera's default IP address, etc). The camera provides a decent picture ... I got this one for my porch two days ago. As a first try I set up everything in my living room, with the camera on the fireplace mantel and the receiver box on my TV stand and connected to the TV. The setup was extremely easy, but right away I got intense white stripes rolling continuously across the screen. The camera was 7 ft away from the receiver box with nothing in between, and all 3 channels had the same problem. Eventually I figured out that the receiver box needed to be closer than 1 ft from the camera for the stripes to go away! This is insane! My guess is that it was caused by inteference from wireless networks around my apartment, even though I myself don't have wireless, and turning my cell phone off did not make any difference. I'm returning it today and getting a 1.2 GHz one instead.
