I got the cheaper (silver) model here on Amazon about a week ago, and am mostly pleased.

In my opinion, the real competition for this camcorder are not the Canon FS100 or similar flash-based mainstream camcorders, but rather the "Flipcams," Aiptek handhelds, etc. Compared to any of those that I've tried, the quality is much better, and the size is still miniscule.

That said, the quality is slightly worse than the 3+ year old MiniDV camera it's replacing... but at 1/4 the size, and entirely flash based, it's MUCH more convenient, very much a "go anywhere" pocket camera.

Key reasons to get this:
- size and portability, a "go anywhere" portable camcorder
- convenience and low cost of flash memory

Key reasons not to get this:

I ordered this camera before starting a 2 month vacation. I got it about 5 days before leaving on the trip, so had very little time to get used to it. Fortunately it is an easy to use camera. I've been using it for nearly a month and still have plenty of memory left on the hard drive. The only time I notice any shaking in the video is when I need to zoom in to the maximum.
I would recommend this to anyone looking for an easy to use, reasonably priced digital camcorder.

I bought this camera as I had fallen in love with the form factor and the fact that it records on SD cards.

I am a professional camera and Steadicam operator for a prime time network TV series. I was expecting a camera that had good quality, but did not have higher expectations, knowing that it is a sub 1000 dollars camera.
It did surprise me on how well it was built, how the menus were easy, yet highly customizable.
I loved the feel in my hands, the dock, pretty much all about it, including the good (but not fantastic) picture quality, except the image stabilization.
That unfortunately, was unacceptable. I could not get a shot without jerks and shakes that were excessive when played back on my 50" plasma. Maybe if you watch it on a small tv set, it will be OK, but ... Read More

The camera is a technical marvel. I've been wanting an HD camera ever since they came out. The HDC-SD9 has not dissapointed me. Five years ago you'd have to pay tens of thousands of dollars to get video this good. Now the downside.

The files are kept in a complex file structure on the memory drive. I wasn't able to copy the MTS files from the /STREAM folder and play them on my T61 Thinkpad. I tried downloading various CODECs and stuff, but wasn't succesfull. I finally loaded the HD Writer software from Panasonic and that worked. But when I exported to MPEG the result was lousy.

I haven't tried editing software with it yet, but I know this much. It will be another two to three years before this format plays in all the media players. But I can't see this format failing so I'll ... Read More

Ok, this is a neat gizmo at an affordable price. Mine's been on the motorcycle... and into the ocean.. on different occasions. However, you're lucky to get a whole 45 minutes on a fresh set of batteries. I've tried many times to record my entire ride to work... which is about 35 minutes. Because it's on my helmet, I can't check to see that it's still recording... and I've missed out on some great footage because it's already died 10 minutes after I've left home.

Audio.. luckily I wasn't very interested in audio.. because it's virtually nonexistent.

Image quality... it's pretty mediocre, but that's to be expected from a product that's a couple years old now. They've come a long way since the release of the 2k.

This is exactly what we were looking for. We were tired of mechanical camcorders that eventually break down and tapes that fail. The Canon is small, lightweight, and the battery lasts a long time. I added a second 8GB memory chip and we have hours of video between dumps to my computer. I haven't tried editing the video files yet and will add that review later.

This camera is the coolest! Not only is it easy to use, but the picture quality is actually superior to the camcorder I own. Not to mention the ease of uploading videos, to Youtube, Facebook, or just to share with friends. There are no complicated cords or software - just plug into a USB port and go! The camera does all the rest!

This junk broke within months of getting it. I was so careful with this camera, but it just stopped working. The joystick part broke and now I can not change modes or play back video clips.

I bought this primarily to be used as a car dash camera.

I attached the helmet mounting bracket to my dashboard and record my commute to and from work each day.

The video is as good as you would see on cops or other police video shows, actually better than some.

There are only 3 buttons for the user interface, on/off, camera, and menu. The menu options I still haven't figured out.

But for the most part, you turn it on, start/stop the video, and that's it.

The device is waterproof and I plan to use it scuba diving and kayaking.

Its a very cool video recorder - very compact, comes with numerous mounting options, and records really good video.

AA batteries last about 4 hours. Rechargeable AA's last around 3 hours. A 4 GB memory card ... Read More
