One caveat of note for the JVC Everio GZ-MS100 (and this may very well apply to other JVC models) the video files the camera produces are .mod files. These files are not read by XP Windows Movie Maker (JVC says VISTA has no problem with them, not confirmed by me) Also the software included is not for video editing and probably useless to anyone half way computer savvy. End result: without buying more software (maybe $70) you can't string together video clips, edit, etc. using what comes with the camera and XP. I'm using trial version of Cyberlink Director Pro but that will cost at least $70 if I want to purchase.

Great Camcorder w/ Fantastic Image Quality - Recommended

The "Panasonic GS320" has proven to be a really solid camcorder for use in our small business (used for making instructional videos). We were looking for a second camera that could come close to the image quality of our primary high-end Canon GL2 MiniDV Digital Camcorder w/20x Optical Zoom. The GS320 exceeded our expectations in our studio, with the following observations:

Pros -
Outstanding image quality from the 3-CCD sensors
Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) works very well
Accurate auto White Balancing
Conveniently placed controls
Great battery life

Cons -
"Cold" Accessory Shoe
No built in light
No external microphone input jack

I owned a DCR DVD 305 previously and decided to take the next step.
Glad I did. Nothing compares to AVCHD. Except maybe real film.
This cam is prosumer. I cont care if it doesn't look like an FX-7.
The selling points for me were:
1. The assignable dial for manual control of shutter, exposure, focus, whatever you decide to assign to it. Having auto settings can be great but some shots require some tweaking and manual control is a must.
2. 6.1 mega pixel still shot. The 305 had a lousy 1mega pixel still shot. Not worth a darn. The 6.1 quality is an option I can boat about. 6.1 mp may be a few years behind, but this is not a digital slr folks. It's a video cam. Often camcorder shot leave traces of interlacing and such that reveal the source of cam it was taken with. Not this one. It looks ... Read More

This looks like a nice video camera. Don't judge a book by the cover. I have made several movies with this camera and none of the sound came out even loud enough to hear when the movie is played back, to top it off, the movie format it produces movies in is AVI format, and microsoft media will not even play it. you have to go thru a video format transformer to get a video clip to be playable on your new windows player. The sound is the big killer....i have no idea if it is the microphone is so small or what, but I have another video camera by AIPTEK that is same size and the sound and video work great on it, plus the movies made by the AIPTEK can be played by microsoft player and also are directly importable to my Adobe Premier video software, whereas the movie clips from the Vivatar will NOT IMPORT into the Adobe ... Definitely a good starter camcorder, has pretty good features.

Pros:

-Quickstart feature

-Comfortable (although wrist strap kinda hurts after an hour or so)

-Impressive zoom (sometimes has trouble focusing on very distant objects)

-Small

-Has SD card slot (for taking crappy videos and pics, but still works if you have to shoot something and only have this camcorder)

-Can take pictures while recording (to MiniDV tape, don't know about when you're recording to the card)

-LCD joystick doesn't get in the way (in case you might be thinking that like I originally had)

-Viewfinder (if you prefer it over the LCD)

-Remote control

Cons:

-Motor noise ... Read More

We needed another camcorder didn't really want a HD because of the problems of no software out there to create HDDVDs. We bought this because our other sony is 10yrs old and didn't want to buy what we had. We are very glad we did. Even regular tapes look stellar in the 1080i format. The 20x zoom is to drool over. It is wonderful we use it for birding only now they are moving. All the techie stuff should come from my husband, but I am writing this so you won't hear it from me. I do not hear him swear or crank about difficult maneuvers. He likes the programable buttons. I found the change to Final Cut HD easy. You edit in HD and made the non HD DVD (we use a MAC) record it back to HD tape and wait till the software is written. Broadcast wants tape anyway. Ease of handling cam great, additional sound source easy to deal ... Read More

I have had multiple issues with this camcorder. It was used a total of less than 60 minutes and then put away for several months (inside the air-conditioned house). Now the screen no longer works; it won't record videos; and the DV connector to transfer what little footage I have doesn't recognize the camera. I bought a replacement camcorder to get the footage off the film and it transferred easily -- so it isn't an issue with the computer or software.

I will not purchase another JVC camcorder as they want more to repair this one than it costs to purchase a new one.
