I bought this camera first at Best Buy first in order to record a very important event. However, after the event, I noticed, while reviewing the video, that there was a distracting dead pixel (greeen spot always on) right in the middle of the image. After verifying that it was on the CCD and not on either of the two viewfinders, I returned the camera for a full refund. I would have exchanged it but every store was out of stock. This camera far surpassed my expectations. I paid $115 for it and wanted it for kayaking. I was willing to sacrifice picture quality for waterproof and most importantly the wrist strap. The wrist strap setup is top notch. It is so accessable and easy to use. I have not had any trouble with framing pictures in the view finder as some others have had. The only pictures that are hard to get is trying to get verticle pics because it is hard to position your arm and keep the camera straight with it strapped to your wrist. I was very impressed with the picture quality. I didn't expect such crisp pictures from this camera. I bought this camcorder about 1 year back and it was working fine for first 5-6 months and then suddenly during our trip to Seattle I started having problems. Camcorder records for a while then gives message saying "Disk cover open accidentally. Turn on power again" and when I do that then all the recording is erased and it starts all over again. I have lost two dvd recordings due to this problem. I contacted Sony support and they just keep on telling me to make sure battery is charged and try using different discs. I tried using different discs (different formats as well...) but to no avail. I don't know what to do. I urge all you prospective buyers to stay away from this product.

Sony HDR-HC7 6.1MP MiniDV High Definition Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom See my review of the HDR HC7 that I own. Since the HDR HC9 is a next generation model using mini-dvs it is quite likely to have the same design flaw that I encountered. At the same time, miserable Sony service support along with astronomical repair charges after the 90 day labor warranty expires which are not disclosed at purchase sets buyers up for ultimate costs that are much higher than the initial purchase price.
