This is a great camera for the price. I have taken tons of pictures in the National Parks, Ski Mountains, Family gettogethers. I would recomend this camera. I have a personal preference not to use the Auto Mode. I set it up for portrait or Landscape most of the time. Great large pictures of blue skys and snow. The large flipout screen is great for taking pictures when you put the camera on a tripod or want to take a night shot and need to set the camera down. After owning my camera for about 16 months, my camera LCD screen went black. The pictures were black and the camera was useless. I went directly to the Cannon Website and opened a repair. set up of the telescope is a breeze. the instructions were clear and also had pictures for reference. it took me about 10 minutes to get it together. i see people complaining the tripod is "unstable" NOT TRUE! its called tightening it! problem solved. the finder scope is made of plastic but hey, its not your main scope and look at what you paid for. the entire setup does feel cheap but think of it in terms of value. the entire weight is manageable, not portable but not very heavy. the direction adjustment knobs stick out way too far for what it does and it might get in your way if your not careful. now, lets get too the good stuff. I just needed a camera for fun..and I have had a Canon before. I didn't like that my old one had a rechargeable battery that didn't last long so I am really happy to find one like my old one that is a million times better in quality and it takes real batteries that LAST!! I LOVE IT!! Takes great pictures and it's super easy to use...comparing it to my old one (which was an Elph), it takes much faster pictures although you do have to hold the shutter button down to take a picture which is annoying to have to tell other people using it. Overall I highly reccommend it..takes great pictures!!!

I bought this lens about 2 years ago and have been using it on my D200. It's sharp. It's light. It's a lens that, if I drop it, I'll live. But the comments that it is rather slow in dim light are fair, and I've been saving for the 70-200 2.8 zoom. Rather than replace the lens, though, I fell in love with the D700. That CAMERA is so fast and so good at high ISO's -- crystal clear at 1600 -- it's like the lens just got 4 stops faster! Suddenly, the 5.6 f/stop (at the long end) is the equivalent of 2.8. At the short end, the 4.0 becomes a mythical 1.0! It's AMAZING. I just upgraded all my lenses similarly. On the D700, this is a fabulous lens. It's fast glass! It's sharp. It's light. The write on screen is perfect for enhancing Native American rock art pictures on site. Often very faded rock art turns out to be a picture of a rock unless you are on site and can see the faint outlines which you can then mark on the picture. Bet they didn't think of this use! NOw how about a bigger lcd?

I think this lens is great but it is pretty expensive especially if you're not an "advanced" amateur. I mean you have to be honest with yourself and ask yourself if you're really going to be able to tell the difference between like a Sigma generic lens versus paying the difference for a Canon lens. No doubt the Canon lens is better quality but are you really that "advanced" to be worth spending this kind of money on a lens?
