I wanted to like this product - I really did. It's a pretty case, the screen looks great, and the feature set is impressive. But the software and documentation problems are maddening. There is PC software that you install to control the frame and load photos, slideshows, etc. This software is frustratingly buggy and never worked for me. It gave several error messages on installation; after finally installing fully, it couldn't find the frame on the network. The screen displays an error message referring you to the manual, the manual refers you to a web FAQ, and the web site points you back to the manual - kind of an amusing tail-chasing exercise. Basically both hardware and software on this thing are poor. You can see individual pixels which makes the images blocky. Doesn't always recognize the JPEGs on my cards. The sound quality is mediocre at best. The finish is cheap and plasticky. I returned it the very day I opened the box. It is a pity that you can't play music as the photos are being shown. You can only do things one at a time.

The 8" versions are the only ones with a 4:3 aspect ratio. This is the ideal and native ratio for 99+% of digital cameras. Only very few take photos in 16:9 widescreen, and taking the time to convert and crop your 4:3 photos into 16:9 would no doubt be tedious. Generally the 16:9 models are more expensive but LESS expensive for manufacturers to make because may other consumer electronic devices require 7-10" widescreen/16:9 LCDs while not many use 4:3 anymore. Don't be fooled by the 16:9 unless you know for sure you need it! The resolution is a very sharp 800x600, and the contrast ratio is a very respectable 400:1. I picked this Digital Photo Frame up at a local retailer for just under $50. For the price it's not a bad buy. I don't own any other digital frames, so maybe I don't know what I'm talking about, but here goes... Firstly, the black really does go with almost any decor. The bad thing is, dust seems to go very very well with the black. I find myself dusting this thing daily to keep it looking nice and shiny. Next up is the input options, including SD, Memory Stick and USB. I'm pretty impressed that something this inexpensive can take any of those three formats, honestly. There are a ton of cheaper digital picture frames from all sorts of companies I never heard of, but you can always count on Sony. Somewhat more expensive for it's size, but it works perfectly right out of the box. There are a few poor reviews here that claim pictures that have been edited don't work, but that's not my experience. I exported a couple of hundred images from Lightroom 2.0 to an SD card, plugged it into the frame, and they display perfectly. The display is bright and sharp with nice accurate color. The images I used were originally high-resolution scans of slides (from a Nikon film scanner). All have been cropped and adjusted in Lightroom, and some touched up further in Photoshop CS3. The XO is a brilliant little computer, but the organization is backed up with technocracy. There is no way to know these computers get to children, since they are simply sold to the government. There are no official XO tech support teams, since they are a non-profit and cannot offer such services. There is no infrastructure to back up the XO once it gets into the 3rd world countries, unless the government chooses to spend what little it has on internet connections for all the children to use ridiculous little Linux machines that have no bearing on the real world. In short, the organization sucks.

I purchased this frame because I read it had better resolution than others that were cheaper. I am very impressed--it delivers. It also has very easy photo transfers and offers an array of options that are useful. The cons (and they are minimal) are that the arm that holds the frame upright could be a little longer. And the remote is not intuitive to use--guess I'll have to break down and read the manual. Overall, I am very pleased with my purchase.
