This is the best lens you get for the money. I can't believe how great and easy it is to use. I used it to take pictures of my son playing soccer and I could zoom him right up and get close up's that I could not have gotten with a regular lens. Love this lens..................

Here's my personal pro/con list after I took this lens out to DC for a weekend.

Pros:
Extremely wide - WOW!
Lightweight. Can't believe how light this. Probably the lightest among wide angle lens.
Interesting effects can be achieved which is normally difficult in normal zoom lens.
Fast focus, and very quiet.

Cons:
My most expensive lens. For sure will take a bite out of your wallet.
Bad lens distortion wide open 10-12mm. Can be corrected slightly in photoshop, but sucks for architecture because lines become bent.

Overall, a great lens for traveling. One of my favorite lens.

This review is for; Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS SLR Lens

For those that are unaware this is actually Canon's third version of a 18-55 kit lens. The first lens was your basic 18-55 EF-S 1:3.5-5.6 (the lens I got with my XTi). Next came the same lens, but with a USM motor (very limited availability, probably because Canon had the IS version in the works). The third version is the 18-55 EF-S 1:3.5-5.6 with IS (image stabilization).

So far, I have been very satisfied with this lens as I have used it to replace the 18-55 kit lens that originally came with my XTi. The IS really helps to keep images sharp when using the camera for hand-held shots only! Don't use the IS when your camera is mounted on a tripod! The lens is not much larger than the original 18-55 kit lens, so this ... Read More

The 24-105 f.4 L (my first "L" lens) was just what I was needing to replace my 5 year old Canon 28-135 that was starting to make strange noises.
First thing I did wass shoot a series of exposures using my 40D, shooting from a tripod using each of the lens' marked apertures and focal lenghts. My test target was a sheet of newspaper stretched tightly on a wall. I was very impressed with almost every image when viewed at 100%. All I saw that I didn't really like was a little corner softness with the lens wide open at around 70mm. This lens is tack sharp for the most part, but bit heavy and could have been another stop faster considering its hefty price! One nice feature that somehow the optical magicians at Canon has pulled off though is the fact the lens is somehow able to maintain its f.4 maximum aperture ... Read More

For an affordable price, this lens gives you excellent performance for every purpose.
The aperture can be set to 2.8 and the portraits are amazing!
At the same time the zoom (up to 75 mm) is also much better than the regular lens provided in the basic canon kit.
In summary, this is a very recommended lens for beginners who don't want to spend a ton of money and still get marvelous results in any situation.

This lens is fairly good for it's low price tag. It has quite a bit of zoom range, which is the main reason I bought it. It is rather slow, but can generally get the job done. I used this lens to shoot a high school soccer game and football game for the school newspaper and yearbook. I got some great soccer results, and got some decent football shots from the students section at night. If you are looking for a low priced zoom lens, try this one out.

This lens is fast, clear, and sharp! I'm mainly using it for portraits, along with the 50mm 1.8, on the D80 body. The feel and build of the lens is solid, giving a pleasing balance on the D80. The next in line, will be the 35mm f2, for indoor groups and everyday walk around lens. Someday I own the D300, and these primes will shine even more.

When I purchased this lens, I was not 100% convinced that it would work with my Nikon D40's autofocus mechanism. It does. I purchased this as a replacement for for my 18-55mm lens that came with my D40. The autofocus had stopped working on that lens. Since I often used it when shooting casual pictures of family and friends, the autofocus was very important.

I rated this lens a four because it focuses somewhat more slowly than the Nikon lens it replaced. The performance is not significantly different from the Nikon lens.

Given the option between purchasing this lens or paying the half again as much for the Nikon lens, I would go with the Sigma lens. The difference in performance is not significant enough to dissuade me from Sigma.
