Can't beat this lens for detail shots! I use it for close ups of wedding rings etc at weddings and it makes a killer portrait lens as well. One of the best purchases I have made for my lens bag.

This lens is soft at F1.4, but sharp at F2. And it can handle low light. These I think, everyone knows already. But F1.4 is not totally useless. If you like experimenting with wafer-thin depth of fields, you can get plenty of interesting special effect shots. That is versatility for me.

i bought this lens last year before going to England. I kept it on my xti practically the entire time I was there, except for the architectural shots I took with my 10-22 wide canon lens. This prime lens provided very high quality shots with a beautiful bokeh. For the price, i have no right to give this lens less than a 5 star rating; and for sigma to produce a lens with a nice professional matte feel and size- this one is hard to beat. I'm still startled by the amazing clarity and sharpness in my images- it's better than real life to be honest.

Bought this for my Nikon D40. Very fast, sharp wide open, and perfect focal length for me for indoor shots. For the cost, its can't be a bad buy.

I was amazed by the clarity of my macro as well as the protraits. Later I learned that this can very well be used for protraits and expect a great result. The photos which I took with this (almost 2000 or more) are amazingly high quality. DOF pictures came out to be the best with this lens.

Interestingly, the price has crept up a bit on this lens in the last few months. It's value must be becoming more apparent to more folks. Nice to have bought before it went up instead of vice versa. Nevertheless, this is the most reasonably priced of the Canon L Primes & is a perfect one to start out with, if you don't own any yet. This lens is tack sharp, has very true, very vibrant color and high contrast. In all these areas, it is probably just shy of the 135mm, 85mm and 50mm lenses, but this is a discerning eye speaking, and these are subtle (although modestly notable differences). The reason why I bought this item is my tele-converterter (by Kenko) was out of order. Comparing the picture with the previous one, I could not find remarkable difference in the picture and the AF speed. But, it seems sometimes the EXIF showed wrong information. I am not sure the cause is this item or my SLR...
