I bought this camera to replace the slightly larger PowerShot A720 that our family lost. The SD850 is worth the extra money for two reasons:
First, it's so small that it actually fits inside my shirt pocket. I don't have to carry it awkwardly in a belt holster.
Second, the flash delay is much, much improved. The A720 took forever for the flash to power up after taking a picture that I felt I was missing a lot of opportunities.
There's nothing really wrong with the A720. For the money -- about $150 -- it was a great camera. But if you value a smaller body and quicker flash availability, this is the camera for you.

Fourth digital camera I've owned and one of the best. I'm not into a lot of gadgetry so I haven't used all the features but for a quick point and shoot it's a nice piece. Upgraded to 2GB SD memory card and that gives me plenty of space for over 500 photos even at the highest resolution.

I bought this camera to replace an old Canon SD250 that was "lost". Great choice. It fits in a pocket, has a gorgeous LCD screen, starts quickly, and has a decent array of features. The image stabilization and facial detection work very well. So far, the battery has been able to last on a weekend trip taking almost 300 shots, but that will decrease. For me, the form factor makes the specialty batteries worth it.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5K 9.1 Megapixel digital camera is truly in a class by itself. It is the best compact digital camera I have seen so far, and strongly recommended it to a relative. My relative is enjoying hers now, and I have been quite impressed with the results. This camera performs superbly under both bright and low light conditions without a flash, certainly an impressive result for a camera as small and compact as this. Pictures have ample contrast and resolution, though tending slightly to the warm side. While she hasn't tried the HD video application yet, I wouldn't be surprised if the contrast and resolution is identical with still pictures. Without question, the Leica zoom lens is a fine performer and is a primary reason why you ought to buy this camera. Without indulging too much in hype, ... Read More

This review is strictly comparison of image quality of these four SLRs, I am completely leaving out ergonomics, features, size of LCD etc.

After shooting 100s of shots and pixel peeping images of identical scenes.

Color reproduction:
1st: Nikon D60
2nd: Canon XTi and Canon XSi
4th: Olympus E420

D60 has sliglty more vibrant and punchier colors than the Canons. Casual user will be much happier with Nikon over the other three. XSi and XTi and identical in this regard inspite of the former's 14-bit A/D converison advantage. Upgarding from XTi to XSi will not give any advantage in real world improvements in terms of color reproduction.

Image Noise (at 400 and 1600 ISO)
1st: Canon XTi
2nd: Canon XSi
3rd: Nikon D60
3rd: Olympus ... Read More

Pro:

- Speed: power-up, continuous shooting. The high speed mode is so fast that I have to switch to the normal speed so I don't waste disk space all the time, and I am shooting raw+JPG on a SanDisk UltraII, not exactly the top of line disk. Comparing to my XT350D it's day and night. Canon seems to have solved the bottle neck of data communication between the camera and the disk once and for all! Feels like I can create an animation movie with this camera!

- ISO 800/1600 is dramatically better than 350D, ISO1600 is very useful now.

- Customizable settings, very helpful (But could use a lot more of these considering how awful the overall menu/button/switch combo are needed to get to the core functionalities! But I'd rather wish for a more streamlined redesign on Canon's part...)

We've had several small cameras, both cannon and sony. This one takes the consistently best pictures, is nice and small so you always have it with you, and everything works. I've had mine for over a year, and it has seen its share of abuse. I even dropped it off a 6' ladder climbing out of an attic - not a scatch or dent - amazing, yes it still works. I've had one error due to sand in the lens (use a case when sticking it in your pocket) but turned it off and on again, and everything worked fine since. The battery lasts a long time on one charge, and a 2-gig memory card is decent for quite a few pictures. It downloads fast to an xp computer with the supplied cable. All in all, I love this camera and would buy another one if I accidently dropped it in the lake or something like that.
