This is a fine quality camera for the price. I've bought several cameras recently (for my home, office and my mom's house) and while they are all made in China, the quality varies enormously. This camera is better built than the comparable Swann camera and it costs less too. I've had it outdoors for several months and it's basicly rust-proof - it's even got stainless steel screws (unlike the Swann - which just hasn't held up as well). The outdoor microphone (built into the cable) continues to work well even though exposed to the elements. The receiver is also nicer that the Swann - newer design - and it has the channel skip feature when scanning - something you don't realize how valuable it is until you're using it. I have to rate this camera as an okay value. The good news is its easy to set up and use, and worked as advertised out of the box. The bad news: the picture washes out in direct sunlight and the colors also tend to wash out badly unless the lighting is just right. I also wish the cord was a lot longer, especially for the wall plug. That said I'm not unhappy with this purchase, it does what it is supposed to do at a good price once you get it all set-up and adjusted. For comparison I would say the picture is not as good as my hi-8 video camera, but still pretty good once adjusted, although pretty awful if in less than ideal conditions. Also doesn't work at all at night. Picture would make a pretty good daylight security camera. The mic works but tends to crack if sounds are too loud etc. overall ... Read More

These little cameras are solidly built and do offer the picture you might expect for the resolution. FOV was also very good as was night illumination for this price. Be aware - They do not mount flipped over (under a soffet with the base at the top) without a little special modification. Also... the IR LEDd's are of the type that can be seen by the human eye. (the subject can see the red LED's at night) Lastly, the tranmission range is VERY limited, even outdoors in clear line of sight. I am keeping them for the price but the will not be integrated into my overall system for these reasons.

I sure wish that there was a standard way to express how wide or narrow the lens view is. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this camera was very wide angle, maybe 90 degrees or maybe more. I see my whole front yard, and quality is very good when compared to cameras of similar price. The night vision is not as wide and is average for this price range. Great deal in my book

I bought this camera as a rear-view camera to aid in docking my 40-foot power boat. I selected it because it is rated for outdoor use and it provides a nearly 180 degree view (170 actually). I have been very impressed. I moored in a tight spot the first week I had the boat, with only 55 feet available to back out my slip and turn 90 degrees to exit. I was able to move within a few feet of the boats behind me with confidence, because the video image quality is excellent in daylight, and the wide-angle shows so much of one's surroundings. I viewed the video image on a RayMarine E120, which has an 800x600 pixel resolution. The camera provides enough resolution that there is no discernable pixelization on this display. The Speco CVC-638/170 is an excellent product.
