This camera is a great bargain and so versatile. The optical zoom is incredible. I was able to film a drowning swimmer being rescued down on the beach from my 12th floor apartment! Not only is this an excellent camcorder, it also makes a great webcam when connected to your computer with a Firewire cable The USB streaming is useless: for some reason it won't let you record the audio track over USB even though it installs an audio driver when you plug it in, and the camera will go into standby while it's in use if you're not recording or playing the tape, so I recommend sticking with Firewire. I bought a Panasonic Camcorder a few years back. I continually got a Dew Detected message. Got that fixed and shortly there after the sound was intermitant as noted in so many other reviews here and elsewhere - though I did not know it at the time. So I gave Panasonic another chance. I bought this model and it worked fine again for about a year or so...Then, Halloween comes around and the sound is not there, then there, then so low you can barely hear it then static then back. Needless to say as with others the moment was lost, FOREVER!

I bought CCDTRV318 for about 18 months and the camera has performed very well. Just 2 weks ago suddenly it didn't work after 5 months of last use.The picture on the LCD screen and in the viewfinder was all blurry and distorted. The picture is getting clear little bit after half hour. I tried changing every setting and every adjustment I could think of. I couldn't fix it. I did not buy warranties so I don't know where to go and how much is going to repair. I bought canon Digital 8 camcorder 6 months ago to give present to my friend. Its working really nice. I think there is nothing in name brand. I would prefer small brand with warranties.

We bought this camera about 3 years ago, we had it for 5 months and it was never mishandled; used about 5 times. Then the tape started popping out and it wouldn't stay closed. Well, we had a service plan with it. Had to drive it 60 miles one way each time!! It has been fixed for the same problem 2 times now. It just sits in the closet. The plan is expired and we found out that it will cost about $90 to repair it (again). There is only 3 on ebay like it and 2 of those are not working as well!! Do not buy a Sony camcorder!!!

We used this camcorder about 3 times before it died. It would no longer record properly. It captured audio but not video (ended up with a blank screen video capture.) The problem lies with a buggy CCD block assembly. The same problem can be seen with similar Sony camcorder models. These camcorders tend to develop the blank screen issue anywhere from 6 months to 2 years after purchase. There are reports all over the internet about this problem but Sony denies that it's a manufacturing issue and wanted 200+ to repair. I wouldn't get this camcorder (or any other Sony camcorder) again.

I just got the CCD-TRV-308 camcorder and it is awesome!! The only thing is is that you cant edit your film on your computer you can just play it back. I give 4 - 4 1/2 stars
