This melodica is nice because it's cheaper than Hohner's fancy professional models. And you don't lose much, it seems: it sounds like a melodica should sound, and it can be played with a reasonable degree of musicality, even by a novice like myself. The instrument comes with a little gig bag and two mouthpieces (a short one and a flexi-tube one). The construction and materials are of acceptable quality, I have no complaints. Those of us with finicky ears are going to want to have this thing tuned, though. Music stores dealing in folk instruments ought to be able to do this, for a fee, or one can find DIY tuning instructions on the internet. I recieved an unplayable instrument, both pipes were not tuned to unison. I was told by the seller that they "came like that", and that I could return mine (at my own shipping cost) for a replacement, but with no guarantee of better quality. At the low cost I paid for this instrument, I was not about to waste more money on sending it back for another instrument of indeterminate quality.

While unsure of what kind of chanter to buy as a surprise for my husband, I've come to find out that buying the Gibson practice chanter and booklet was the best choice for beginners after all. The instructor at his first chanter class informed my husband that he, in fact, possessed the standard practice book and chanter for beginners, and suggested that others in the class buy the kit as well. If you are looking for a practice chanter and booklet that is recommended by instructors then this is the one. By the way, be sure to get extra waxed hemp, as it needs to be changed often.
