Overall Yamaha's Silent Brass System is a great buy for anyone who has trouble with practicing due to roomates, neighbors, etc. I would say the mute eliminates all but about 5-15% of your sound (depending on how loud you are playing). Great for people with apartments, dorms, parents that just don't want to hear it, or even the musician who's selfconscious about their practicing (after all- who wants to hear a neverending pattern of lip slurs, techncal exercises, and slow repetition of that one part the player just can't quite get right??)There is a bit of resistance as some of the other reviewers have mentioned but I found that it actually strengthened my chops and improved my endurance. I would definitely recommend this product to other players.

I played the recorder for many years and decided to take it up again as an ideal instrument to play for the hospice patients that I visit. I had been told that a good plastic recorder is the best choice for beginners, so decided to find a good one, and the reviews on this definitely seemed to be best. And so far, I have very mixed feelings on this instrument. The simulated wood is very nice looking, and it slides together easily and plays beautifully. For awhile. But I find I have constant issues with it clogging. I've definitely learned that it has to be warmed up considerably before playing and even then, I get maybe 15-20 minutes at best before I run into problems. I love these swabs for cleaning the inside of flutes and recorders! They do the job great and it is so easy. If you have never tried a swab for cleaning a woodwind instrument, you should consider doing so. The swabs are a most convenient way of cleaning your instrument.

I have played a beautiful old tenor recorder made of pear wood for the last 42 years. This sounds almost as good and has the low c# key which mine doesn't have. For travelling, I feel much better about bringing this along. It is a great value. I took it on a recent trip to Africa and, if I had been so inclined, I would have felt fine giving it away as a gift and buying another when I got home.

I've played the guitar all of my life and have several Yamaha classical guitars. These are the only nylon-string guitars that are I will buy and that are worth buying. Yamaha classical guitars are the best inexpensive high quality classical guitars that you can purchase. I've bought several other brands of classical guitars in the past but always end up selling them. I always keep the Yamahas. If you research classical guitars on the Internet, you will find that Yamaha brand is the best classical guitar that you can buy for the money. They are not hand crafted like the more expensive brands but who cares? They are made by a computer controlled machine to exact tolerances. They play just as great as one made by a craftsman.
