Musical Instruments : Snoopy Jaw Harp

With these you get even less than you pay for, and that's saying something. The difference between one of these and even a mediocre instrument is astonishing. As someone who's played some of the very best instruments of this type, the mere thought of the "Snoopy's Harp" sends chills up my spine. And that's not some sort of snobbery: I'm all for inexpensive when it works. But these are simply unplayable: poorly made and with a design that would be lousy even if it were well made. If you want to play jaw harp don't waste your money on this item, but instead find one from a reputable make (my personal favorite is Zoltán Szilágyi in Hungary).

Musical Instruments : Bronze Large Murchunga

Although it took some time to arrive, I was impressed by the sound quality of this product! Although it is quite small, it produces a clear vibrant tone and is very easy to play. It is not loud, but the tones have a ringing effect that serves to amplify the sound a little. My only complaint is that it was somewhat tarnished and dirty, but this was easily fixed (lemon juice and salt removed the stains nicely). This is my first time playing a jaw harp, and I have only had this product for a day; but I can already get clear rhythms and tones out of it. It takes a delicate touch and does not require much physical exertion to get a pleasant sound. I recommend it for the inexperienced and experienced alike!

It took me a while to figure out how to get a good sound out of a jaw harp, but once I did, I became a huge fan. Here's the trick...

In order to get a good sound, you MUST hold it sturdy against your front teeth to create stability. I had been unwilling to do that since I didn't want to scratch the front surface of my teeth and possibly cause damage, so I came up with a method that works wonderful...

Place a thin (.5 cm) strip of duct tape along the surface of the frame where contact is made with the front teeth (which need to be slightly opened). Make sure that the tape does not touch the reed or interfere with the space where the air is moving. Once set up, you can hold it stable and create a variety of sounds. There is no discomfort, the volume is loud and the ... Read More
