Musical Instruments : Rosewood Bagpipe Practice Chanter, Book, & CD

I found the practice chanter hard to blow and difficult to separate. It looked better than it sounded. However the book and CD were helpful and easy to understand.

Musical Instruments : Gibson Practice Chanter Kit

This is a good practice chanter from a name-brand manufacturer, and includes what is probably the most widely-used beginner's book and a CD. The included reed is decent also, which is a plus. There are better chanters out there, but this is a perfectly good choice. I prefer long practice chanters like this, as it feels a bit more like the pipe chanter itself.

If you are buying this for yourself or as a gift, and you know little or nothing about piping, you can be assured this is a good starting point.

Even so, I would STRONGLY recommend finding a good instructor. You simply cannot learn to play the pipes properly without one. Modern notation does not convey how the pipes are actually played. Pipe music has an incredibly heavy emphasis on gracenotes - and the ... Read More

This is a must have for any Church that does weddings. You know if you don't have it, you'll be asked if you do. Don't be caught without this wonderful CD. Great songs, all of them. Ravenwood Manor highly recommends.

I will admit that I originally got a set of these bagpipes for the expressed purpose of bugging my fellow dorm mates. For this purpose, this item worked superbly. However, after my sophomoric antics, I was still stuck with a set of bagpipes. It is a difficult instrument to play, and if you're interested in learning how to play, purchase a practice chanter. This set works okay as an intermediary between the chanter and the full set. The sound quality is pretty low, but it's a durable instrument. Also, it works well as a decorative piece. Otherwise, I would call this instrument a necessity for any returning upperclassmen going into a dorm scenario.

Pakistani-made reeds. The shoddy quality should go without saying.

Spend a little more on a good reed. Some of my favorites are Warnock, Walsh, and Apps practice reeds. If you're stronger and have a long practice chanter, try a Gibson or an Abbott reed

Musical Instruments : Authentic Scottish Bagpipe Beginner's Chanter Kit

I started taking lessons about a month ago and right away my instructor insisted I get a new chanter. This chanter did help me figure out how to play the nine notes and grace note scale but it sounds funny when played along side a better quality chanter. It also has some defects tht my instructor pointed out. The top three holes are not lined up making it difficult to play at times. I have recently replaced it with a Dunbar chanter sold by "Universe of Bagpipes" for a kit price of $99. That $20 extra is worth spending on a quality chanter unlike my self who now spent $178. $79 of which was wasted on the Caledonia chanter kit. Other quality chanters for a fair price are Naill and Gibson plus others.

Rcv'd item prompty. Unfortunately the mouth piece was cracked. We used it before noticing, so don't feel that it is fair to return and/or worth the hastle, but surprised that it came in that condition. Oh well...you get what you pay for. One of the cheaper one's on line. Testing to see if Bagpipes is for us...still trying it out. Comments welcome!
