It was a funny coincidence that by the time I managed to acquire this compilation I'd already collected and heard lots of the tunes and artists Mick Patrick and Malcolm Baumgart were cross-referencing in their sharp, witty way (like other compilation liner notes they did); and would have to agree with many comments/comparisons they made! "You can't Blame a Girl for Trying" DOES sound like a Sandie Shaw song! "Just Wait till Spring is Here" DOES sound like "part 2" of Carole King's "Might as Well Rain Until September"! There are some nice variations done by these mostly British girls of hits others had like "We'll Start the Party Again" (IMO, not my favorite Lesley Gore song anyhow!); "Home of the Brave" and "Trains and Boats and Plains". Listeners, if you already love the originals you likely ... Read More

The reviewer who cites this as a "pre-Beatles"-sounding group is mistaken. The Symbols have an obvious Beatles-Hollies influence in their vocals, with a bit of The Association thrown in. If you like strong group harmonies with a late-60s production sound... here's your album. P.S. anybody who buys a disc because the cover shows the group dressed in psychedelic fashion expecting to hear something like Pink Floyd needs to learn how to audition before buying! Dear child of the 90s: EVERY group dressed like that in 1967!

Jody Miller could easily be thought of as the Martina McBride of the 1970's but while Jody did not have nearly the success Martina has had in recent years (despite a decent career run of almost 15 years and winning a Grammy in 1965 for Top Female Country Vocalist) she has it all over Martina in terms of a far more powerful, flavorful voice. One of the most remarkable things about Jody is she still sounds "country" even when remaking rock n'roll favorites with her sheen-smooth pop voice. Jody's greatest country success came 1971-1974 with an almost unbroken string of top ten hits, many of them remakes. While the arrangements of her BABY I'M YOURS comes perilously close to being a carbon of Barbara Lewis' original (it's still a magificient track) her HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN turns that moody folk rocker ...
