We are a long way from German Expressionism in this opera which was composed in the 30's but is brimful of Viennese-style Romanticism and open, heartfelt melody. It is fashionable to denigrate Korngold as one who resisted "progress" in music but his harmonic language and through-composed style are by no means always retrospective. The plot is slightly sprawling - not as dramatically taut and controlled as the operas of his great admirer Puccini - but the characterisation is deft and the depth of colour in the orchestration always a source of delight. Is there a simpler, more beautiful tune than Kathrin's "Ich soll ihn niemals, niemals, mehr sehn"? And there are so many such moments. It is extraordinary to think that when Korngold died prematurely at sixty in 1957, he was planning another opera; ... Read More

8.Gounod: Faust from: Malibran [C.D.R.G.]

These days, it is very rare to find a recording of French romantic opera sang correctly. Here is a relic from days gone by, in which the singers actually use their voices as musical instruments, rather than vehicles for personal gain. All the singers on this disc have long since passed, and many of them have been almost completely forgotten. However, Faust has never been recorded in a purer form. From the opening aria to the final resolving chord, the performers never waver from their task, and Cesar Vezzani's C during the famous aria "Quel trouble inconnu me penetre" is like nothing you are likely to hear on opera stages these days. The somewhat scratchy 1920's recorded sound does not detract at all from the sheer dramatic intensity of this performance.
It is a pity that this CD is so hard to ... Read More

While composer Robert Planquette may not be the best known composer, his LES CLONCHES DE CORNVILLE is worthy of attention. While it may not be performed very often today, we do have this EMI recording that was released in the 1970's, one of many French operettas released by EMI. This recording of LES CLOCHES DE CORNVILLE is the product of Paris' Opera Comique under the direction of Jean Douissard and includes luminary French singers such as soprano Mady Mesple, tenor Charles Burles, and baritone Bernard Sinclair. The liner notes mention that the plot is similar to two other popular French works MARTHA and LA DAME BLANCHE.

This particular recording has a number of wonderful highlights including a rousing overture that could easily be at home in the repertoire of concert halls. Germaine's "Chanson ... Read More

This recording is certainly a victory for Mr. Plasson. The orchestra sounds clear and accurate, but passionate when needed. But, alas, the singers mistake Gounod with a light Mozart's singspiel. The worst of all is Van Dam. Pity! He has such a good and beautiful voice, his french style is impecable, but this is not the role for him (not at all). Leech isn't either to congratulate: despite his efforts, sounds too light when dramatic strenght is needed. Hampson is impecable also, but so is tooth paste... They all lack bass tones. On the other hand, Cheryl Studer is wonderful. The jewelry song is meant each word. She seizes the essence of the character. Nadine Denize is also wonderful in her brief but meaningful role. Get this recording and stash it beneath the classic ones (and sigh, of course...)
