Maybe this isn't like the other Crayola records but it's not like it came out of nowhere. It's outside-music, you know, like Sun Ra, John Cage, Albert Ayler, etc. The Red Crayola wasn't the first nor were they the last to make this kind of music, since it's still thriving and multi-faceted. It has good and bad practitioners, just like any other kind of music. Someone who isn't even a little familiar with the genre has no business reviewing something from it. [This paragraph was in response to some earlier ignoramus reviews, now deleted] That said, this double-disc is uneven, but when it's good, it's excellent. The first, long track of the second disc is a fantastic live-set from Berkeley. Completely inspired. The next piece with John Fahey - at his most outside in that decade - is also very good. ... This CD is one of the few I've bought in the last few years deserving of my $16. Really, it's extraordinary... I had never fully realized the potential of New Age music until I heard this. I've listened to it until I know every note of every song; by all rights I should be heartily sick of it. But "Just Dancin' Like Fools" remains one of my all-time favorite songs. This CD captures the spirit of a season in a way I've never heard done before. The richness and fullness of the music in all of the tracks is quite incredible. Very frankly, anyone who doesn't like it can suck it up. (So buy it, and like it.)

EXCELLENT PORTRAYAL OF THOMAS MANN'S NOVELLA Britten said of this opera: "It's either the best or the worst music I've ever written." I don't know if it's the best but it is great music and certainly worth the listening time which is close to 3 hours. Although this opera portrays the passion of Aschenbach (a writer experiencing writer's block) moving thru stages of 'confusion' and the 'stripping of dignity'; it is more about the right of the individual to express himself,both artistically and in love. It should be their right to do so without censure. It provided for Britten the opportunity to create a role of a mature man for his life companion and muse,Peter Pears. I would strongly suggest that you first read the novella by Thomas Mann upon which this opera is based. Your listening ... Read More

Simply stated, Andre Rieu performs some of the most beautiful music in the world today. "Dreaming" is my favorite but in the end, I can likely say that anything he has done is my favorite. You are transported to a beautiful universe where it is rather difficult to return to normal everyday life.
