Charm and wit, both hallmarks of Thomas Beecham (1879-1961) in conversation, rehearsal, concert and recorded music, are in abundance here.

These are short, light excerpts from operas by such composers as Mozart, Gounod, Vidal, Saint-Saens, Berlioz, Tchaikovsky, Sibelius and Debussy. Sometimes the upper frequencies are more brilliant than need be in balance with mid and bass, but this is a minor concern.

There isn't much to say, but get this recording, either in this, or other couplings now available on EMI.

If you look past the hype of the "Great Recordings" label, this EMI box set of 8 CDs is an amazing bargain, since it provides up-to-date remasterings that in other incarnations cost twice as much or more. On the used market the cost per disc is scandalously low. But it hleps, of course, not to own most of the colleciton already. The time span covered runs from just after WW II to the Seventies, and although Karajan made dozens of recordings with the Philharmonia Orch. for EMI, this collection is restricted to the Berlin Phil. (all in stereo) and the Vienna Phil. (historical mono).

Rather than review the contents, which I and many other reviewers have done as individual CDs, here's a rundown of what the collection contains:

Concerto for Piano Violin Cello and Orchestra ... Read More

There's no sense in me commenting on the performance itself as any life that there might have been was completely lost to the recording medium. This CD is a perfect demonstration of why the DDD label doesn't mean much, anyone can slap together a digital recording with minimal expense or expertise and still make it sound bad.
