If you recall K-TELs 1980's CD called "Stars On 45's", you'll have an idea what this one is like. Each of the 4 medleys is about 12-14 minutes long and altogether they present 100 non stop songs sung by an "all star cast including (some) of the original artists". Like the Fortunes, Mungo Jerry, Gerry & Pacemakers. Most are done by the "Hooked On Singers" in a happy and upbeat style. Great music for a party or driving your car! Great Oldies never die, they say.

This CD is advertised as containing the "original" version of Waterloo in addition to the German version. Not true: it contains the English version of Waterloo (the original was in Swedish, which would have been a nice addition since the English version is widely available). It would also have been nice to include the French version, but it's not here. The medley is unique to this disc as far as I know so overall it's okay for the price, but it would have been better if it had all four versions of Waterloo (or at least the three non-English versions).

Somegirl is an interesting group. 3 cds, 3 different vocalists. The music is essentally similar in style on all 3 cds, but the vocalists differ greatly. I've really been looking forward to this release. So why didn't I give it 5 stars? Well, I think the songwriting isn't up to par. The one exception is the excellent 'I've Loved Before' which lyrically and vocally sounds as if it is an experienced woman singing about love, and not some young girl who just found out that love exists. 'She's At The Discoteque' and 'Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps', while both well done, simply sound dated. Doing a remake of one of Abba's best known songs doesn't seem to be the greatest move either. This is just another repackaging job from the money spinners at Universal. The tracks are the 2001 masters used for the reissue of all the original albums, and if you have none of these, then you might consider buying this double set. The second CD however, while not being number one hits, are tracks 'taken' from number one albums. I have no problem with this, but running at a slim 43 minutes, when we all know CDs can hold up to 80 minutes, you'd expect they might have been a little more generous. After all, it's not as though there isn't enough material to fill up the disc. One can't help but feel that Universal are bleeding consumers. Given this, my advice is to wait until the price plummets, or buy it second hand. Not good value for money, and quite a few punters believe these tracks ... Read More
