Karajan is probably one of the most accomplished conductors to come out of post-Mahler era of German symphonic tradition influenced strongly by Beethoven, Mahler, and Wagner. This means that in addition to usually using larger groups to play the smaller traditional chamber group pieces as intended here, the instruments with symphonies such as the Berlin Philharmonic are also generally modern except perhaps for the soloist's. Conductors and musicians are trained to perform every piece as if it were a Mahler symphony. All of these things redefine the piece significantly so the performance simply has more the dynamics of a German Mahler or Wagner piece instead of an Italian chamber piece which was devised for different and smaller specifications as well as style of performance. OK, so I'm the last US listener to catch up with this piece. Wow. Amazing. Nothing extra, nothing missing--it's beautiful, but that's not what I'm writing about---listening to it is like being inside someone's heart. If you've ever thought you could make someone keep loving you through force of will...it's strange that something so "nostalgic" can feel so tough and aching at the same time--when Meg sings "I love you--things end," I thought my stomach would sink right out of my body. I really can't tell you if it's a "good" record or not from an audiophile POV. But I play it. A lot...Peace, Ellen

This music presents boring and familiar concepts to my ears. It's more about a casting a spell of currently hip-depresso atmosphere and setting a dirgelike pace that, combined, is supposed to create interest or emotion,
but musically it is unsophisticated and that is not because it has a country taste, either - some country is quite clever and authentic. Maybe I've heard too much music but this is like listening to someone's bad music recital.

Shelleyan Orphan's greatest weapon is lead singer Caroline Crawley, whose winning voice is tempered by Irish choir techniques (akin to early Dolores O'Riordan, but with much less of that annoying crack in her intonation) and lyrics rich with poeticism.

Century Flower is the band's second album and probably its most folksy, but still infused with pop delights. Lead track "Shatter" makes violins and saxophones sound rocking, sexy and vibrant instead of conservative or subdued, "Tar Baby" has an enchanting atmosphere and a moody rhythm over Crawley's heartfelt singing, "Timeblind" has flawless harmonies between the divine Crawley and her partner Jemaur Tayle, restrained but charming, and "Summer Flies" marries its lyrical theme wonderfully with music that supports all the imagery.

I bought this CD because I heard them open for the cure. Hardly anyone paid them any mind then they played burst and the audience went crazy. So I bought this cd for that song. Guess what its on Humroot a cd released years later. However this mostly acoustic cd with Double bass and cello blew me away along with Caroline crawley voice.I didnt know I could appreciate music without a dam drum machine and synthesizer up this point. This cd is great to drive thru scenic PA with the leaves changing colors. I would compare them more to October Project and Loreena Mckennitt
