It is hard to communicate the feeling of excitement that surrounded a concert or concert series by the Juilliard String Quartet in the 1960's, when most of these performances were recorded. To those for whom serious music really mattered, and it seemed that there were many, there was a touch of the sacred about their appearances. There was nothing pompous or hieratic about their manner, quite the contrary; they were direct, businesslike and untheatrical, but they seemed to present their audiences with a glimpse into the heart of music. I used to have this CD when I was maybe 8 years old. Now I'm 21, and I'm thinking of buying it again, because I have such fond memories of it. As I remember, it's perfect for younger kids (i.e. me) as an introduction to Beethoven's music, and as long as it's not too loud, it's very easy to fall asleep to.

Elegant, soothing and graceful. I recently moved into a work-at-home situation and had to get away from my rock-and-roll standards if I were to get any work done. I find the rich sounds of this album perfect for me. It isn't distracting and seems to steer my creative energies effortlessly. I love it.

I bought this cd set years ago and they're still my favorite cds. Each cd follows a genre (baroque, classical, romantic, or modern and impressionist) and gives a great sampling of some of the strongest pieces in that genre. I don't know what I'd do without these cds.

I agree with the reviewer who regards this reissue as a sonic disgrace. Indeed it is. I obtained this set thinking the sound would represent an improvement over previous EMI reissues of the Busch Quartet. Unfortunately, what I hear emerging from my speakers is cramped, dull, and lifeless--especially when compared to some other remasterings of these classic recordings. I would strongly recommend that any one who cares for great chamber music performances (which these undoubtedly are) obtain either the Dutton or the Pearl remasterings. Unfortunately, the Dutton label has not yet released all of the Busch Quartet's late Beethoven, but what they have given us to date represents the best transfer so far of this historic material.
