I like these two albums very much. The reasons to buy them are for the filler. You can find most of the hits on any greatest hits package, but at least here they are in stereo and sound beautiful. Surfer Girl is probably the better album. With songs like "Hawaii", "Catch A Wave", "In My Room", and the title song how can you go wrong? "Surfer's Rule" is also an alright song with Dennis Wilson on vocals. Listen for the attack on The Four Seasons at the end of the song. Shut Down Volume II has a few hits like "Fun,Fun,Fun", "Don't Worry Baby", and "The Warmth of The Sun" all of which are in stereo. The real reason to listen to this album, though, is for "In The Parkin' Lot", "Keep An Eye on Summer", "Pom Pom Playgirl", and my personal favorite "Cassius Love VS Sonny Wilson". ... Read More

Interesting pairing of albums/CD's. Surfer Girl was the last of their surf themed albums, but what a great one. They had matured musically quite a bit by this time and it shows. There is some filler instrumentals here, but a great album. The title "Shutdown Vol. 2" is slightly misleading in that it implies that there was a Beach Boys album titled Shutdown. There wasn't, but there was a fairly rare Capitol compilation album called "Shutdown" that had 2 Beach Boys songs on it including the title song, "Shutdown". The rest of the songs on the album are not real good compared to the Beach Boys songs, but its a collectable now. I have a copy of it autographed by all of the Beach Boys circa 1964, really cool! I am a DJ who plays beach, Boogie and Blues plus a little crossover material for shaggers, swing dancers, boppers, and hand dancers. This album contains one of the most complete selections of "dancable music" I've ever run across. Being that I do a great deal of traveling to play at and for various dance events/groups I have found that the overall reception of this music has been outstanding. The Album truly has something for everyone.
