Romance novelist Jane Austen, during her later years at Chawton Cottage in Hampshire, is said to have practiced on the pianoforte each morning before settling down to write. "Jane Austen Entertains" reproduces several period pieces from Austen's handcopied collection of music, suitable for pianoforte, some with flute and/or voice accompaniment.

The selections on this CD were actually recorded in Jane Austen's house. The result captures in a fairly authentic way the kind of home entertainment available to ordinary people of Jane Austen's day, long before record players, television, and other electronic media. The selections themselves are simple 18th and early 19th century songs and country airs, meant to entertain gatherings of family and friends. These types of gatherings ... Read More

I have several hundred piano Christmas cd's, and as soon as I heard this one, it immediately jumped to my "Top 10 Favorites" storage section. The combination of classical music and carols is fantastic. I would highly recommend this cd.

A fetching parlay of sundry sonatas and dance music ("balletti") by contemporaries Heinrich Biber [1644-1704] and Johann Schmelzer [1620-1680], the former known for his rather austere violin works, the latter his innumerable instrumental ballet suites. Remarkable about this collection is its melodic appeal, as well as its diverse, and diverting, invention. No hint of dour academia surfaces here in music originating from Austria under the umbrella of the "Viennese Court." No pedagogy, either, just attractive, smoothly charming and comforting compositions intended, over three hundred years ago, for exactly this purpose.

Special mention should be made concerning the thoroughly delightful period instrument performances by Ars Antiqua Austria, under director, and first violinist, Gunnar ... Read More

From a recommendation of a friend at work, I purchased this for my 4-year-old son who appears to be developing an interest in exploring all types of music. My partner and I enjoy classical, so we didn't want to neglect that genre.

Upon first listening to it, I felt I wanted the narrators to shut up so I could hear the music because the renditions were so faithful and beautiful. Then, I realized that the story was engaging as well, and the editors had carefully chosen each piece for each part of the tale. There are plenty of pauses between each bit of narration to allow the music alone to be part of the story.

My son had no such reservations. He loved the Vivaldi CD so much, he can't sleep without it.

The stories are about children, real or imagined, who ... Read More

This is another one of those Philips concept albums where they cobble together performances from their catalogue and then package them under some corny title to attract the general public who might not have much knowledge or interest in classical music.

Good news for those of use who are knowledgeable and interested in classical is that this is a CD of all Arthur Grumiaux performances at a great discount price! Grumiaux is one of my favorite performers, and Philips uses his performances in a variety of concept albums, one other worth checking out is "Mozart for Coffee."

All of these songs and performances on this CD are excellent, and the sound quality is wonderful. Some of the selections fall more on the "pop" side of classical music, but with Grumiaux they are rendered ... Read More

8.Fritz Kreisler Complete RCA Recordings from: RCA

I was delighted to hear the many never-before-available recordings in this set. While Kreisler's name is obviously eternally linked with his masterful, unique and inimitable approach to encore peices (in which he consistently demonstrates unerring rhythmic control), he also remains singularly engaging in the weightier sonata repertoire also represented in this collection. Especially intriguing are excepts (w/piano) from the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto and Lalo's Symphonie Espagnol. (I had no idea he'd recorded these.) Kreisler's eternally youthful readings make this a set to grow old with. Every aspiring violinist deserves to apprehend the possiblity, to awaken the dream, of making an individual imprint through what they re-create as well.

Beethoven Lives Upstairs is a delightful way to introduce Beethoven's work to young and older students. Be careful telling young students about his deafness. One six year old dissolved in tears and couldn't play Beethoven for another year!

Despite being a music fanatic and having listened to all types of classical music for over 30 years, Pachelbel had only showed up on my "radar screen" a few times. Everytime I heard a piece, typically the "Canon", I would make a mental note to get a recording, but then proceed to forget. Once I actually made myself a note, I had problems finding a definative recording with any kind of review at all. I took a chance on this one, but was not disappointed. With the exception of the violin concertos, I have never been a big fan of Bach or baroque in general. I like this Pachelbel CD better than any other Bach I have, perhaps because the music is less encumbered than most Bach. Overall well worth the risk.
