These duets are wonderful. Sinatra had such style. There will never be anyone like him. The duets on these CDs are fabulous. The people who sing with Sinatra did a great job and the songs chosen were great. I would recommend this CD to anyone who is a Sinatra fan.

Some of the first music I purchased years ago at Costco, taking a gamble on the quality of pieces chosen, orchestrations, etc..
This remains among some of my favorite collections, as the music is beautiful, rich, and well-done. I ended up buying it about 8 yrs later for my sister b/c she loved it so much.

When the Met did its first production of Poulenc's Dialogues of the Carmelites in 1977, there was only one recording of this opera available in the U.S., the one recorded during the composer's lifetime. Then came a video from Australia in the late '80s, a spiffy new CD set from the Lyon Opera in 1992, and with the composer's centennial in 1999 several other videos and soundtracks, including ones in German and the original Italian (for the La Scala premiere in 1957). It was Poulenc himself who wanted the opera to be sung in translation, and Chandos has honored his wish by committing to CD a fine production by the English National Opera. This succinctly-titled version uses a new libretto with numerous subtle revisions that make the text easier to sing, e.g., the safe house has been moved to "five, ... Read More

I was introduced to Jonathan Dove's music when I saw this opera a few years ago, and while I have not heard this particular recording aside from the cuts available on amazon's site, I whole heartedly recommend it.

There are many modern operas that do not lend themselves to the theatre. The composers have little knowledge about what makes good theatre. Jonathan Dove is the antithesis to all these composers. He knows how to tell a story and make us care about what is going on. "Flight" is an incredibly magical opera--so rare nowadays--because is really works in the theatre. There have been many comparisons made about Dove's music. One can definitely hear his influences--Adams, Bernstein, Sondheim--but he is certainly a man with a voice all his own (not that Adams/Berstein/Sondheim and the like are ... Read More

Schuricht conducts here with a wonderful quality of peace difficult to describe and probably impossible to emulate. If you prefer your Wagner excerpts in the form of rent-brakers then you'll have to look elsewhere. Nowhere is there a hint of bombast or bluster; instead the Parsifal music truly comes across as saintly. These are beautifully restored archival treasures, and fully justify the trouble to reissue them.
Hanssler continues to impress me with excellent, sometimes superb reissues.
