1.Mana by: James "Bla" Pahinui

Bla has one of the most unique and pleasing voices! His soulful renditions of some slack key classics amaze me. You can, of course, hear some of his father, Gabby Pahinui, in him. But, Bla's renditions raise the barre even higher. There is much emotion in his singing. His slack key picking has a unique sound based upon playing left handed and upside down, so he uses his thumb for the notes and his fingers for the bass rythyms. A must addition to any slack key afficianado's collection.

E Got a Light, Mac has quite a few vintage songs about smoking that have great beats and there's even music for dancing on this album! Many of the songs are pretty positive about smoking; and of course that's a reflection of days gone by. The sound quality is excellent and the artwork and casework is excellent.

"Smoking Woman On The Street" by Rev. Gates starts this album off with a pretty old recording; Rev. Gates performs this well using his excellent diction and his excellent sense of timing. The woman in the song is also doing a great job. Tex Williams contributes an excellent number with his vintage tune named "Smoke, Smoke, Smoke That Cigarette!" The chorus background singers do a great job of harmonizing and Tex Williams delivers this without a single superfluous note! I ... Read More

I guess that Jimmy Dean and Jerry Reed got lost in the smoke as neither of their classic smokin' songs are included on the CD. Peggy Lee and Tex Williams are however. They add to the fun but this collection is no classic.

The soundtrack to Mysterious Skin by Robin Guthrie and Harold Budd is ethereal and dreamlike. I've been a fan of the Guthrie/Cocteau Twins since the late 80s, and am a bigger fan of the Guthrie/Budd duo. Together they tone down the heavier sounding guitar riffs and altogether omit Elizabeth Fraser's muse-like voice that are endemic to the Cocteau Twins' sound. Each piece is quiet, understated and surprisingly soothing despite its undercurrent of sadness. I think that the film, which I also enjoyed, would have had an entirely different feel if it had been carried by another genre. But this soundtrack stands alone. All Harold Budd and/or Robin Guthrie fans MUST own this disc. It will not disappoint.
