As Bill Evans entrances you with his solo piano albums, as Art Tatum floors you with his mastery on his solo recordings.....Dr. John will slay you with the pianistic mastery of his genre. He is a treasure, an encyclopedic connection with Americas musical past.

I lived and breathed this record for almost 6 months transcribing almost all of it. My growth as a player took a quantum leap and I am indebted to the Doctor.

The joy of this recording are the wonderful new discoveries with each listen....the inner voices within his incredibly challenging chordal voicings, the bewildering time keeping in the left hand, the syncopation, the octave work, the emotional sensitivity....I could go on and on...

The Doctor takes no prisoners. Buy it, live it, love it and (for ... Read More

I first encountered Dr John from watching his appearance on The Band's Last Waltz concert. Now theres a guy who can play Piano I thought. This album came out a few years later.
If you like solo Piano (only one track has a vocal), in the New Orleans style this album is for you. A couple of great boogie woogie tracks, a tribute to (at the time) the recently deceased Professor Longhair, and a few standards. All played with a panache and style that remains almost unique to this day. Jools Hollands difficult to get solo piano album covers similar ground but isn't quite as good as this.
My favourite tracks - well perhaps Dorothy, an unusual waltz time tune that opens the album and the rolling Big Mac.

To call this simply a great "first effort" would really be to undermine the work done here by Jakki Jelene. This is a fantastic and solid album with captivating melodies, great harmonies, and an interesting production. Knowing that the artist sang, wrote, arranged, and produced the album herself only makes it that much more impressive. Some of the standouts here are Comatose, Treasure, and My Sanctuary.

I stumbled across this album quite by accedent and it hasn't been off my CD player since. Aled Jones really has the most beautiful male voice I've ever heard. His beautiful renditions of some of the most well known and loved christmas carols, as well as some of the less well known is a delight to the ears. His versions of The Covantry Carol, The Angel Gabriel and God Rest You Merry Gentle men gave me goose bumps and his duet Silent Night sung with Hayley Westenra is really too beautiful for words to do it justice. This album really is not to be missed.
