A freind told me these guys rock so I went and picked up the CD. At first I was really upset because of the grunting vocals. However the guitars, drum and bass are out of this world - the combination being some of the best I've ever heard. The production is real good too with good clear sound. I just wish a band with this kind of talent would toss the death vocals. If someone like Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden took over it would be scary how far these guys could go. Even though I hate the grunting I'll still give this a 5 star, because I would recommend to any metal fan. Will I buy more from this group? I don't think so, this is where my death metal begins and ends but at least I picked a good one.

5.Purcell: Hail, Bright Cecilia! from: Polygram Records

As well as the St Cecilia ode this disc contains two superb biblical 'verse anthems', the second ending with a lovely and most unusual quiet Alleluia. The disc is thus excellent value in terms of the amount of music provided, the performances have authority and scholarship stamped all over them, the performers are totally accomplished professionals in music of this period and the recorded sound is very good in a discreet way. The piece I am having difficulty with is the Ode itself, or at least its opening number. I was not expecting Handelian extroversion from Purcell, but what is the connexion between minor-key harmonies and a solemn bass solo on the one hand and on the other the sentiment 'Hail bright Cecilia, fill ev'ry heart/With love of thee...' etc? Purely as music it is fine stuff, but it would ... Read More

At the moment, Black Earth is the only recording of Fazil Say's own music that is officially available in America. The title composition is an homage to Turkish "minstrel" (we need a better word here!) Asik Veysel and the sound of his stringed baglama. Say's use of hand damped strings to create the sound of a folk instrument not only led him to bridge the gap between "world music" and "classical music" genres, but also becomes the basis of his pizzicato string and orchestral percusssion effects in pieces like Stravinsky's "The Rite Of Spring."

This recording may appeal to a diverse audience. First are the fan's of this young virtuoso's rising career (see Amazon customer reviews of his Stravinsky recording for an example, or count the hits on You Tube). Next are students of classical music ... Read More

Really now, there is way too much Gilbert and Sullivan in this. Many other people wrote operettas too! Well, there is a little Lehar. But there needs to be more! I thought a little Candide by Bernstein should have been in there too. But the Gilbert and Sullivan excerpts are nothing to be ashamed of. They are done well. A little too operatic. And I just know some of these overtures will delight you. Average recording. Average playing. There's my two cents.
