I saw the ballet of Peer Gynt earlier this year and afterwards fled to the nearest music store for a recording of the music. I picked up this copy because it was reasonably priced, and Deutsche Grammophon has a reputation for putting out quality CDs. I was not disappointed! Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic do a beautiful job of interpreting the two Peer Gynt Suites and the Holberg Suite as well.

Stephan stubbs, while (in my opinion) has not the perfection of playing, he surely has the most perfect understanding of this kind of music, there is not other disc that i feel so drawn into like this disc (sadley this is the only one by stephan stubbs solos that i own) but at the same time at moments of a need to a better sound i go to Hopkinson Smith or Nigel North discs, which are assuredly has wonderfull understanding of the early music. but again stephan stubbs playing saint-luc is the most lively music i have ever heard, a must to every lute player and listener.

Just listen... York is a very good composer (would John Williams and so many others record his pieces otherwise?); and yes the Bach piece is great, but the rest are more of what I have come to love of Andrew York.

Early Recordings indeed. These are phenomenal. As far as I'm concerned, Du Pre was peerless as cellist. She towered above her generation like Jack Johnson or Bobby Fischer. But that's all hyperbole- her youth comes through as much in her later recording as here, recorded in her late-teens. Her approach and exuberance and creative drive seemed born of a child's capacity to give herself over completely to whatever enthralled her at the moment...

This is great intro to Du Pre, or, conversely a grand release to round out your collection. So, If you go for mastery, technical skill and superb form: you may like Yo-Yo Ma more than Du Pre... but if you go for intensity, ferocity, passion bordering on the insane- Du Pre's your gal. Just give her treatment of the Elgar Concerto a listen. ... Read More

Since these suites are for a solo instrument, the demands on, and the possibilites for, the interpreter are huge since every little detail will be heard clearly (if the sound engineers has done a good job!). Many versions therefor are too 'easy' or too romanticized, I think, making them nothing but 'middle of the road'. Fortunately, there are a few really good interpretations, mentioned further down this review, that holds the artistic aspects of the work higher than it's sell ability. I think Beschi's version is one of those pleasing exceptions.

Beschi here gives a racy, yet not fierce or too powerful interpretation of Bach's last three cellosuites, with a rather dark underlying feeling of solitude that's present most of the time. To me Beschi's playing sounds like a tone-painting ... Read More
