Sibelius Finlandia must signify to his citizens the same meaning that Elgar `s Pomp and circumstance for the British people, the final expression of fervent, passionate and fevered feeling of brotherhood and national fervor. Vladmir Ashkenazy achieved an incisive and towering performance with the members of one of my beloved orchestras ever: The Philharmonia Orchestra. He extracted the musical vein in its whole expression and exultant boiling.

Karelia was also another artistic achievement, having in Colllins the maximum peak until this date. This version could be my second choice.

Tapiola Op. 112 ha a winner: Hans Rosbaud and Berlin Philharmonic in 1957 but Ashkenazy transmits us the essential and reminiscent echoes of Debussy 's La mer and obviously his Fourth Symphony ... Read More

This CD is very relaxing. It is also all Classical Music. It is perfect for someone that enjoys Classical Music, it would not be a good choice for someone who enjoys relaxing Nonclassical Music. We play it during diner preparation and dinner, and also sometimes when reading.

I have been a fan of Mr. Isaacs for many, many years and his renditions of musical works have grown more touching and profound as time goes on. This recording is a masterful interpretation of what are to me a number of newer and rather obscure pieces such as Mr. Isaacs own exquisite "Song Without Words" which leads off and the haunting and eerie Prologue to "Hiawatha" by Mr. Hansen which gave me chills as well as some older "chestnuts"such as the "Pavane for a Dead Princess" by Ravel and the "Swan of Tuonela" by Sibelius which literally brought tears to my eyes. Normally to keep the interest up, one might expect a mixture of pieces of varying tempi on a recording such as this, but while all the pieces here are most definitely on the slow side, Mr. Isaacs and The Cascade Symphony give an hypnotic interpretation ... If you look past the hype of the "Great Recordings" label, this EMI box set of 8 CDs is an amazing bargain, since it provides up-to-date remasterings that in other incarnations cost twice as much or more. On the used market the cost per disc is scandalously low. But it hleps, of course, not to own most of the colleciton already. The time span covered runs from just after WW II to the Seventies, and although Karajan made dozens of recordings with the Philharmonia Orch. for EMI, this collection is restricted to the Berlin Phil. (all in stereo) and the Vienna Phil. (historical mono).

Rather than review the contents, which I and many other reviewers have done as individual CDs, here's a rundown of what the collection contains:

Concerto for Piano Violin Cello and Orchestra in C op.56 'Triple Concerto' ... Read More
