While definately not Horne, Callas or Bumbry, this is a warm and enchanting take on a sometimes overly familier opera. Between a Veridan Carmen (Stignani) and Puccinian Don Jose (Gigli) not to mention that the whole thing is sung in Italian, we have something here that is probably very very different from what Bizet envisioned, but the sense of pure enjoyment in the performances jumps right out of the speakers. Look other places for a more "correct" performance of this opera; this one is for sheer enjoyment of a great story in song. Decent sound quality.

Hi, there have already been a lot of raves here about Callas and Christoff, but I just wanted to add that Rolando Panerai is a very touching and beautiful Amfortas. There have been many great recorded performances of this role, but Panerai's is still something special. His voice is so smooth and bright and beautiful. If you are a fan of his work at all, you should know that he is also great on this recording.

I give it only 4 stars because the sound is such thin mono. But, at this price, I think most fans of this opera will have a good time with this set.

All this time, I've been wondering as to why Joan Sutherland's coming to my country suddenly christened her as La Stupenda. In my opinion, if there is one person who can be called Stupenda, it is Maria Callas. No other soprano in history...no one...has achieved the kind of work she did with music during the middle of the 20th century. No one is as accomplished a musician, a technician, an artist, or a dramatist as she is, and by listening to this disk, we can see that she is indeed the greatest soprano the world has ever given us.

How and why would I say such a thing? Look at the repertoire she handled during the earlier part of her career. I have never seen a soprano who can do Isolde, Kundry, Norma, and Puritani...successfully! Add to that the successful Brunhilldes and the Aminas, Imogenes, ... Read More

One can't help but be impressed with the agility in Bartoli's voice. Vocal fireworks! And yet the "Mentre io godo...", "Caldo sangue" and "Lascia la spina..." are so sweet and calming. I consider this CD a must have!
