I wrote Rick Elias a letter after his first"album",and he sat down and hand wrote me a reply back.Anyone who would do that much for a 'fan',is someone to be admired!!His music rocks and his words lay his soul bare for all to see.Having lived through the drug culture of the 70's and 80's,I can easily identify with his stories;people struggling with their beliefs, disappointments and heartaches. The song'Without one Word', strikes a chord deeper than anything I've ever known as I've been that person more times than icare to admit. If I'd owned a gun I would not be here today, thank God!I've been in a band, spent time in jail, been held hostage at gunpoint, beaten and abused behind bars, etc. When life gets me down I play that song, and am reminded of how far I've come by the grace of God.His hand literally ... I have enjoyed Glen's music since I was a kid and "Live at the Troubador" is the first recording I have gotten on CD. His smooth voice, positive humor, and great choice of songs make this a recording that I would recommend to all fans. I like "The Honey-Wind Blows" and "going back to where I come from." "That's the way it's going to be" is a very positive song and "The Mermaid" is very humorous. However, my favorite song on this entire CD is "Far Side of the hill." No matter what kind of mood I am in or how stressed out I am, this song always helps me relax. If you don't have this recording, you should get hold of it.

This individual is well versed in various styles. He's played with some excellent players in the industry, Barry White's bass player for one and the late great Joe Pass for another. He incorporated the various influences right here in this one cd. Studying with him for an unfortunately brief period, I'd discovered he had many more ideas waiting in the wings. Many of them are jazz/fusion oriented but here in this cd he has an eclectic mix of sounds. Very smooth and laid back to uptempo dancable, there's is rock, pop, light funk, RnB and also some middle eastern overtones. All this done with solid rhythm tracks. The instrumentation is all his own but the vocals, of course, he shares with his accomplice Lina. Very nice freshman project. I only wished I could have been around at the right time to record ... As imaginative and versatile as bands come - the Critters displayed a somewhat different range of styles from those of the Beatles or the Byrds circa 1966, though their range that was probably as wide and deep - and closer to that of the also-underrated New Colony Six on the latter's 1st 2 albums. Especially on their first album, the Critters generally write and play well enough that you experience them being not slavishly influenced by anyone - on each song they find points to take off from and then quickly proceed strongly on their own road, with both grit and luster.

The idea of them manifesting a 'bubblegum sound' (of which some reviewers have accused them) evaporates when you listen to the actual lyrics and melodies/harmonies of those particular songs. They are in fact evoking certain ... Read More
