This release is a collection of both studio and live performances with the BBC symphony orchestra from the 1930s. At this time, this ensemble, along with Beecham's London Philharmonic, were generally considered to be the two best symphony orchestras of Great Britain. The live performances, which include Debussy's La Mer, the Enigma Variations of Elgar and Rossini's Semiramide Overature are of special interest because they are from the intitial series of concerts from 1935 that Toscanini gave with this group. In particular, the La Mer and Enigma Variations made a very big impression on both critics and musicians in England. In my book Opera Rara can do very little wrong. All their recording are wonderful in every respect - singing, quality of the recording, packaging & booklet notes, etc. This recording is no exception. Though a highlights rather than a complete recording, this is the best Meyerbeer opera they've done, which is odd considering that of all Meyerbeer's Italian operas, this was his only failure. My only question is why they recorded this in highlights only & the others (such as Margherita d'Anjou which could use some cuts) in complete recordings. If you're looking to try an Opera Rara Meyerbeer recording, or want to sample one of his early Italian operas, this is the one to buy. Great melodies & exciting music, it's little wonder Rossini left Italy & went to Paris once Meyerbeer arrived ... Read More

I love the music of E.Morricone, and bought this disk since it had so many titles that I wanted. But although the songs are great, I found the performances - by the city of prague philharmonic - to be quite weak. There is very little emotion conveyed - and the emotion is what makes E.M.'s music so compelling. Even worse, the performance differs from what you remember in the movies - e.g. the good bad and ugly track had no chorus (no grunts); the mission soundtrack sounds like a symphonic rendition without the catholic power. Stick to the original soundtracks.

Tengo casi la totalidad de las bandas sonoras compuestas por este genio revolucionario del lenguaje musical para el cine. Ennio nació para el cine, no hubiera encontrado en otro escenario un mejor lugar para desarrollar su gran talento. La Filarmónica de Praga realiza una impecable musicalización, sin quitar o agregar algo diferente a la banda original. Estos 2 CD's reúnen lo más significativo de su producción con una sola excepción, "La Califa" una pequeña película que sobrevive por su banda sonora, una de las mas bellas compuestas por Morricone. La verdad resulta extraño que no fuese incluida.
