I see that the other 3 reviews for this 3-CD set all assign 5 stars and, I suppose, if they are less "collectors" and more of Ronnie Dove fans, that's a fair assessment. The sound is good, the liner notes informative, and they certainly go deep into his vault of hits. But not deep enough.

First of all, the man had 20 charted hit singles from 1964 to 1969, all with Phil Kahl's Diamond Records of New York City (Kahl, in fact, produced most of those hits). But somehow, in spite of turning out 60 tracks, they contrive to leave out two legitimate hits! While inserting their uncharted B-sides!

Mind you, the two missing weren't among his top charters by any means, as Dancin' Out Of My Heart could only get to # 87 Hot 100 late in December 1967 (b/w Back From Baltimore), while ... Read More

Never before in my life was i moved so intensely and directly by classical music. I put the first cd in my player and a few minutes later tears are flowing. I find myself dancing and moving to a rythm i already seem to know. Wow, i just have to share that.

Carter's Clarinet Concerto (1996), written when he was 88, is one further exploration into the possibilities of the concerto form, and here it's superbly recorded by the great Ensemble InterContemporain with Damiens on clarinet. This concerto, Carter's fifth, is lightly scored (in fact it's written for a chamber orchestra of 18 players), and consists mostly of playful, flickering "conversations" between the solo instrument and various sections of the orchestra, with two meditative "windows" of slow, wistful music in the middle. It's as if Carter saw the clarinet as an essentially social instrument, which therefore becomes quiescent when the company is gone, but really comes alive when the party gets going. The other pieces here are odd bedfellows to go with Carter--the Reich is a good example ... Read More

John Adams becomes more popular by the year with his compositions for large orchestra ('Naive and Sentimental Music', 'On the Transmigration of Souls') and operas ('Doctor Atomic' and in a way 'El Nino') gaining justly increased performances, but Adams has another side - chamber works. As with all great composers it is the smaller, exposed works that often tell us more about a composer's genius. The two works on this splendid recording prove this to be the case.

'John's Book of Alleged Dances' was written for the Kronos Quartet and is a bit of whimsy in its series of eleven dances for string quartet and a rhythm track made of prepared piano sounds. The result is a group of works that pay homage to the backwoods simplicity of America's folktunes. The dances are endlessly creative, with never ... Read More
