Arbiter Records is establishing itself as the label which specializes in pianists who were not given their just due by the major record labels during their lifetime. Among their most significant releases have been items featuring pianists Miecyslaw Horszowski, Benno Moiseiwitsch, and of course, Paul Jacobs.

For those used to the sober-minded Beethoven advocated by the likes of Alfred Brendel, these live performances by Paul Jacobs will come as a shock. Jacobs intention seems to be to portray Beethoven not as the last composer of the Classical era, nor as the first composer of the Romantic era (ALA Rubinstein and Horowitz) but as a progenitor of the then dawning industrial age. The Waldstein is played with motoric intensity, the first movement going at a relentlessly fast tempo. ... Read More

Being used to heavy weight renditions of Beethoven Sonatas by Russian masters like Richter, Gilels, Vedernikov, Neuhaus, at first listening I had an impression that Barenboim's Beethoven is a little too light-weight, especially earlier sonatas, but after repeated listening I was quite taken by the noble beauty and delicacy of his playing. Waldstein, Moonlight & Pathetique Sonatas are exceptionally well played with refinement and inspiration.

Only thing I can not stand in this set is Appassionata Sonata played like Chopin Nocturne, which made me nearly fall asleep! I like unpredictable and uncompromising Beethoven played with extreme contrasts by Richter and Gilels, but Barenboim's interpretation was a revelation and quite refreshing experience to listen to this set.

Brendel plays as though the period movement never existed. He plays like he played in the 1960s, insisting that Beethoven MUST have a slow movement in each and every sonata. Take opus 10 #2 in F, specifically the Allegretto movement. Brendel crucufies this movement by playing it dead slowly. Yet Beethoven clearly had in mind a spritely dance-style movement -- otherwise, why mark it "Allegretto"? But Brendel, self-indulgently, knows better than Beethoven. My own current favorite for the sonatas as a whole is Seymour Lipkin, who at least is able to differentiate between tempi. Kovacevich is also very good. Brendel certainly brings great focus to the music, but sadly he is misguided and, one has to say, blissfully(?) ignorant.

I Bought this for my 18 year old Autistic son. He loves music. Sometimes he gets wound up so I thought this would be good to help him unwind at night before he goes to bed. He seems to like it a lot. I know I do. It is good to add the classics to our collection.

I think the highlight of this disc is the #5 (op.10/1) sonata. Kovacevich is really in his element in the first movement, which is full of tension, drama and nervous energy, and in light of which the interpretation of the rest of the sonata falls into place. The performance #6 is a likeable performance of a very likeable minor sonata, though as often with the earlier sonatas I think I prefer Kempff. I won't comment on #7, because for some reason I'm not very fond of the piece.

I have mixed feelings about Kovacevich's Pastorale. The notes point out that the name "Pastorale" was given to the sonata by Beethoven's publisher, not by Beethoven himself. Kovacevich's interpretation sometimes sounds as though he is out to prove the publisher wrong, with (e.g.) cadences that sound oddly vehement in the ... Read More

This is a great CD for sing-along. I remember these songs from when I was growing up and I enjoy sharing these with my baby.

In Turkey, it's very hard to come by full cycles of Beethoven Sonatas, at the very least it's hard to come by good ones. For one, the three most important companies are not represented (DG, Philips, Decca). That's the reason that made me order from USA. After several obsessive days spent on determining which single set I would order (I'm a student, couldn't order several ones), I decided on Arrau version. Sure the Kempff and Schnabel sets are very popular and I have been recommended to listen to these works by Kempff, Schnabel, Backhaus etc. by concert pianists. I have acquired a lot of the complete sets afterwards, let alone standalone recordings, but none even compares to this set. Most simply put, this 14 disc set is the jewel of my heart, as well as the jewel of all the CDs I own.

Schnabel's classic interpretations of Beethoven's sonatas should be
heard in a better transfer than this. Absence of noise does not equal good sound quality! Poorly done noise filtering also removes a part of the original signal and distorts piano sound, which becomes thin, tinny, nuanceless, and unrealistic. This undercuts Schnabel's achievement. Much better quality versions are available.

Good labels for historical recordings: Pearl (noisy, but preserves piano sound), Naxos (less noisy), ... (many others).

Bad labels for historical recordings: Arkadia, Classica d'Oro, Enterprise, ...

Iffy label for Schnabel's Beethoven: EMI (most people consider these overfiltered).

This is an outstanding collection of classical music for the home, regardless of age. We own two of the three CD's in this collection seperately, and they are excellent.

The "songs" were selected from excellent previously made recordings from the vast Phillips classical music catalog. The sound quality, selection and performances are excellent.

The songs selected are especially good for very young children. They are brilliant and pleasant, and they are not too loud or heavy. They are great for playing at home. Highly recommended!
