Ned Rorem, one of America's most famous, and certainly one of the most accesible composers for the voice, is known more for his songs than his operas. Indeed, I had never heard of these works until I specifically looked for English-language one act operas. The first is a radiantly atmospheric fairy-tale about Victorian repression--and its consequences when a snowman comes to life. The second is a simple children's game, bringing to attention how easily children play with death. The writing is superb, and both prick up the ears and the intellect. The Magic Circle company has done us a great favor by making these operas available to us. One can only wish that other companies would do the same favor. While the orchestral and piano accompaniments are accurate and appropriately atmospheric, ... Read More

I first heard this opera with some of the same singers, same conductor and different orchestra, at the new festival at Ancient Corinth. I admit I mainly went for the novelty value, but greatly enjoyed the performance, especially as the surroundings were magical - the Temple of Octavia in the archeological site was used as the 'set'- and the audience, though unaccustomed to classical music, was very attentive.

I wondered whether I would enjoy it quite so much on CD - after all, there's no 'ambience' to make up for any faults. But my misgivings dissolved at my first hearing. All the singers, especially the female voices, are excellent - the Oreste and Ifigeneia voices particularly appeal to me - and the orchestra (and harpsichord) are excellent. And though the opera itself may be ... Read More

This La Boheme does not disappoint, although it does not particularly impress either. Richard Tucker's portrayal of Rodolfo is rather good, although he doesn't quite compare to Jussi Bjoerling. Some passages sound a little nasal, but his tone overall is good. Robert Merrill's Marcello is one of the highlights of the recording, as is Giorgio Tozzi's singing of "Vecchia Zimarra." Mary Costa's Musetta is rather good also. It's a relief to hear her pay attention to the written dynamics in "Quando m'en vo" and hit the high B's with great precision and control....unlike some sopranos (*cough* Eva Mei *cough*).

I've always sorta been partial to Leinsdorf so my opinion of the conducting is a little biased, but the orchestra is sounding particularly good.

Overall, it's a good buy, worth ... Read More

In my opinion, this is one of the best classical Christmas albums. It's not only for classical music fans. It features familiar classical songs as well as hymns and secular Christmas songs. In other words, it's easy on the ear for those who are not usual fans of high pitched soprano sounds.
