I love this CD! It's just plain old fun for adults and children alike. I had never heard of David Holt before I listened to this CD and I'm now a confirmed fan. For me, coming from a rural background, the folk instruments (spoons, bones and washboard), banjo and harmonica are like coming home, comfort food and your favorite dog. This is "down home" music, stories, and humor all woven together is a brilliant live performance. It just doesn't get any better--unless Mr. Holt were to appear in person! Very highly recommended!

6.Einstein on the Beach by: Philip Glass

This work is the last of the strictly minimalistic compositions by Philip Glass and in my opinion his best. The re-recording successfully addresses some issues the first version had, and at the same time creates new. The overall sound is a bit darker and more romantic, which makes it easier to listen to, while not sacrificing the minimalist feel. Aside from production, the choir is at another level compared to the other recording. The incredibly fast ending (Spaceship) is unlike anything minimalism has produced, intense and powerful. Some argue that this version is dull - no, it just makes some passages emotionally colored, be it romantic or theatrical. But, there are some drawbacks. The beginning of the Trial had a wonderful interplay between Johnson, whose replacement doesn't have such a ... Read More

"Einstein on the Beach" is an epic work: long, challenging, and important. Thanks to Amazon.com and Phillip Glass' own Web site, one can hear sonic excerpts from the composition. In this case, however, the excerpts are somewhat misleading because each track is less about the sound itself and more about the accumulating weight of that sound as it is multiplied by the time that elapses as each movement unfolds and as the complete work is experienced.

Even so, I doubt this is the sort of work many will sit still for and fully attend to in some sort of marathon audition. Rather, it is a sonic "stream of consciousness" that will likely pass in and out of one's awareness as it progresses...something felt as much as heard.

What does it feel like? The answer to this question requires the ... Read More

I know it isn't titled that way at the top of this page, but this is the South Carolina installment of the Deep River of Song series of John and Alan Lomax recordings.

I'll begin by stating the obvious. Lillie Knox is one of the shining lights of the entire series. You may or may not like everything else included here, but I have to assume that most everyone who hears this disc will love Lillie. She has such a gentle quality to her performances, and one of the most lovely voices in the series. Very soft and sweet. I'd choose Got the Keys to the Kingdom and Troubled About My Soul as her top 2 moments here.

Zack Knox is another interesting performer here. He has a lonely, gentle quality to his music that is quite rare for males in the series. We can only wonder what sadness pains his ... Read More
