I can't thank Evan Evans enough for releasing this. As a Jazz pianist and educator myself I own much of Bill's back catalogue, but this is like sitting in on one of the great man's practice session's and peering over his shoulder to see how he does it. I'd have bought it for "Voicings" alone. Hearing Bill search for the sound he can hear in his head is absolutly absorbing. I didn't ever meet Bill, but I feel that he had little enough ego not to worry about practice material being heard by the public, especially as he is no longer here to share his knowledge with us in person. Forbidden Planet was always a science fiction favorite of mine due to it's outlandish setting, great acting, great sets, great characters, excellent science fiction and human element. It's pretty much everything good science fiction should be but too seldom actually achieves: intellectually stimulating, frightening, sexy, bold in story and look, fantastic, etc. This 2006 remastering is stunningly beautiful even on a standard DVD. Someone kept or found an excellent print or negative which is very fortunate. So in this Forbidden Planet DVD we have arguably the most significant science fiction film of the surrounding decades beautifully restored to probably better than it's ever been seen in a theater. I had the opportunity to hear this collection live at the Lobero theater Santa Barbara, California and later have this musical book/recording autographed by Jordi Savall and Monserrat Figueras. The live performance was sublime and inexpressibly beautiful and moving. The recording comes very close to the live performance especially if you have the equipment to listen in the super audio CD format.

ok, i don't own this album (thank god) just listened to the snippets, and i just have to ask....who in their right f*ing mind would buy this s?!? it is beyond me...just listen to the sample of "over the rainbow".....i don't know whether to laugh or cry....WOW, that's all there is to say....why don't they let you give no stars?*

As well as the St Cecilia ode this disc contains two superb biblical 'verse anthems', the second ending with a lovely and most unusual quiet Alleluia. The disc is thus excellent value in terms of the amount of music provided, the performances have authority and scholarship stamped all over them, the performers are totally accomplished professionals in music of this period and the recorded sound is very good in a discreet way. The piece I am having difficulty with is the Ode itself, or at least its opening number. I was not expecting Handelian extroversion from Purcell, but what is the connexion between minor-key harmonies and a solemn bass solo on the one hand and on the other the sentiment 'Hail bright Cecilia, fill ev'ry heart/With love of thee...' etc? Purely as music it is fine stuff, but it would not have come amiss ... Read More

Kudos to the editor of this collection. You may like some of these tenors, you may not like some of them, but that's not the point. The point is to introduce you to a bunch of tenors in a minimum amount of time and space, and this is what this recording does splendidly. With few exceptions, each tenor featured here gets to sing the piece (or one of the pieces) he is most famous for. These are, obviously, NOT all of the tenors you can imagine, but they well represent the standard tenor repertory presented on this disc.
