I've always loved Zellar's music. His talent for describing the mundane and melancholy small town life is superb. However, in his latest offering, it seems like the music is forcing the lyrics - instead of the other way around. In my opinion, the true greatness in Zellar's music was in the way the lyrics flowed - telling a story - while the music seemed to fit in perfectly around the lyrics to enhance the total effect. Sadly, this is lacking in the "Many Moods." (have a listen to Born Under and several of the tracks on MZ and the Hardways to see what I mean) And perhaps this latest work is a sign that Zellar is maturing as an artist.

We've got the Usual Suspects, folks like Bruce Springsteen and Pete Seeger (Hobo's Lullaby) to notable bluesman Keb Mo (Baby, Don't Let me Go Homeless), jazz singer Madeline Peyroux (I Think It's Going to Rain Today), and African womens ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock (Stranger Blues).

"Give US Your Poor" is a generational collection which will have something to appeal to just about everyone in the family. The engineering is above par for a live collection--you don't get a lot of audience feedback which can just sound like static after a while. The cause is definitely worthy.
