Sadly, Gerald Finley and Julius Drake fall way short (on too many levels to recount) of what Cheryl Studer, Thomas Hampson, John Browning and the Emerson String Quartet accomplished in their now-legendary and classic Samuel Barber set for Deutsche Grammophon. The insight, personality and sense of spontaneity that Studer and Hampson, not to mention the Barber pianist par excellence, brought to these songs is nowhere to be heard in this new recording. You are well advised to skip this and acquire the DGG set for a rewarding experience unlike any other. Out of kindness I gave the Finley/Drake recording 2 stars out of 5 but I wonder if that's one star too many.

I was bored. The quality of this oratorio is certainly below that of, say, Esther or Messiah. The recording still deserves five stars, because the performers didn't write the music, so it would be unfair to penalize them for the fact that I found the music to be under par. I like Harry Christophers, The Sixteen and the usual soloist crowd that frequently sings with them, that's why I bought this thing. I wasn't disappointed in the quality of their singing, but I wish they had applied their talents to some better composition.

Haydn's Creation is worth buying if you are a fan of classical music at all. Great German singers keep this one entertaining. Some parts are boring (i.e. the intro and Adam and Eves 11 minute long borefest), but for the most part it is pure holy german. The first part is sung from the point of view of three archangels telling of the creation of the Earth. The second part tells of the creation of man. The third, and final installment, is sung by Adam and Eve. A great CD by a great composer.

A MOVING AND INSPIRATIONAL INTERPRETATION OF 'THE CREATION'.
More than any other composition that Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) wrote, this work reflects his very early beginnings, a small peasant village in Austria, where people sang folksongs for the pure joy of it, and where dancing on the green was a daily occurence.

With 'The Creation' we come to the culmination of Haydn's work. It was written to a text prepared by Baron Gottfried van Swieten, who reworked pre-existent material: a libretto orignally given to Handel that went unused. In 'The Creation' the choruses serve not only to reflect and praise the process of creation, but also to provide columns upon which the oratorio's architecture rests.

Interestingly enough the oratorio begins not with the expected ... Read More

I love "Elijah" -- I sang it in college. The music is fine, but when I downloaded it into Windows Media Player the music was split up and stored in a random order, rather than in chronological order. I don't know why, and I couldn't fix it, so I deleted it. When I loaded it into iTUnes for my iPod, however, it was fine.
